Press Conference: Fisher, Aggies turn attention to Napier & Gators

Desperately needing to snap a four-game losing streak, the Texas A&M Aggies play host to the Florida Gators at Kyle Field on Saturday at 11 a.m. On Monday, Jimbo Fisher, Albert Regis and Layden Robinson spoke to the media as the Maroon & White prepare for the Gators.

The following are live, paraphrased notes from Jimbo Fisher’s Monday afternoon media availability:

• Dissapointed. Didn’t get the outcome we wanted. Started much better. Good blocks. Conner Weigman was playing outstanding. The moment wasn’t too big for him. Devon Achane was outstanding. Redzone, we were 4-for-4. Kickoffs were good. Punts were good. Moose Muhammad was good with returns. Defensively, they started fast and got tempo. They had one drive off the fake punt and finished the drive with a field goal. Second half, they got the run game going. We needed to make one more play. We have to keep scratching and clawing. Anthony Richardson is a phenomal athlete at Florida.
   
• You cannot have contact with the transfer portal. There’s a window. I’m for the transfer portal. The rule is until they get in there, you can’t recruit. It’s something we will use.
   
• Tyler Santucci has a big part of coaching special teams. Each coach has specific assignments on special teams.
   
• Tackling, you need to make a thud, step on toes and wrap up, but you have to be careful because we are banged up.
   
• I’m not getting into the Lane Kiffin comments. I’m going to be quiet.
   
• The best rushers are when the linemen are collasping the pocket. It’s like walls closing in on you.
   
• The first two drives were the same. We were executing and staying ahead of the chains. We executing pretty well the whole game. You have to keep your focus and concentration.
   
• Florida is physical up front. Fitting the gaps. When you rush Richardson, you have to hit him when you can, legally. Do you job and play disciplined.
   
• Moose is getting more oppurtunities. There is another level he can go to. We are getting the ball to him. He can play. He has good strong hands. His emergance is huge. Ainias Smith was a huge part of what we do. Someone’s unfortune is someone else’s fortune.
   
• The last couple weeks in practice, you can see Conner come on. I’ve always thought he would do that. He has played in one game. He is freshman. I’m extremely happy, and I love to coach him.
   
• If you are thinking about what you are doing on the field, it’s too late. You have to see with your eyes and react. It’s human nature not to mess up. It’s human nature. Yelling ain’t going to get anything done.
   
• Edgerrin Cooper and Antonio Johnson, I am hoping they come back. Day to day. Coop should be back this week.
   
• Kam Dewberry is doing very well. He’s powerful and smart. He is playing very good football, wasn’t perfect, but he’s going to be a good player.
   
• We were balanced early in the game with runs and passes. Achane had 13 carries, that;s the most he’s ever had.
   
• We feel very comfortable with Blake Smith. Donovan Green was banged up in the thigh.
   
• The four players are still suspended. LJ Johnson is on our team. He is not in that situation.
   
• I thought that should have been targeting against Conner Weigman at the end of the game.
   
• Playing Florida in 2020, our kids battled back. That game was against a really good team. We found the way to make the really good play. Those things went our way. We didn’t lose the rest of the year. They were a very good team.
   
• We need to play the run better. I won a game one time giving up 400 yard rushing yards when I was in Auburn.
   
• Bowl eligibility is always important. You always want to be in a bowl. That’s one of our goals, and we need to do that.
