In the 90's and 2000's the losses stung, but they didn't hurt. A&M was so close to breaking through as a big time program, but the Aggies would always seem to lose the Cotton Bowl.
The losses didn't hurt as much because back in the day the kids were true amateur's. These players were students who happened to be playing college football.
The losses hurt a little more because of the mercenary aspect of todays college football.
The NIL and the transfer portal has changed all that. Todays player is more of a semi professional who can leave whenever he want and play for another school at the drop of the hat.
If the $$$ aint right, this player is at risk of leaving and putting his name in the transfer portal.
The going rate on a 5 Star quarterback in the SEC is north of a Million dollars/year
