I am an RC non apologist.

RC has won a Big 12 Championship and multiple SWC championships. The last we have seen.

He lost only 4 games at Kyle for the entire '90s. Only 12 home losses in 14 seasons.

He has the best winning % in SWC history. He has the best record ever for an Aggie coach 123-47-2. Was his Offense pedestrian, yes, but he had numerous top 10 Defenses.

With facility upgrades, he could have continued winning at a high level.

I've heard this multiple times over the years. Any validity to this?

Maybe it was his time, or 1-2 years past his time, but he is the last coach we had that won even a conference championship! Wonder why there was such pushback?

I may be a touch young to remember all of this correctly

Because Mack was on a roll. He was recruiting at a high level. We panicked and made a bad hire. That cycle put us 10 years behind.

RC should have been"reassigned" after 2000 coming off his FOURTH bowl loss in a ROW! And more importantly OU, Texas, OSU and Tech owned his ass on the field and or recruiting. Completely owned and way past his time. God he is a great man and well appreciated but he stayed too long like most do.

In the 1999 Sugar Bowl, down two scores to Ohio State, RC punted on 4th down with 3 minutes left in the game. Was time for him to go.

It is and always has been the curse of parading dorks in overalls instead of cheerleaders.

No way he was out recruited by OSU and tech. He was 6-1 against Okie lite. 8-7 against tech, 5-4 vs OU.

It was the recruiting by Mack that panicked the BMAs.

$Bill acknowledged it and I was of the opinion it was a topic during Gates's offer to Slocum of a staff role. I wasn't a fly on the office wall, but there clearly was an effort by Bob to ease him out.

RC's defenses never finished below 35th in Total Defense. Post-RC, the next time A&M did that was in Jimbo Fisher's first year with Mike Elko.

BULL*****!!! RC was owned by Leach....not much has changed. RC was a good coach, he was never, ever gonna be a "great" coach....get over it.

He might have been if given the facilities we have today. RC begged for upgrades and was never given that advantage. Our locker rooms and facilities were high school level.

Just stop with this facilities non sense he always choked in bowl games. Any meaningful road game he was outcoached we never won a game because he outcoached someone. HE COACHED against ****ty teams and still managed to fuvk up a game or two every year. We owned recruiting he was a good man but a terrible cosch. Obviously you are young and didn't waste thousands of dollars traveling to road games to watch him get confused by ten man fronts. And the meaningless fg's he kicked the one vs ND when we got ass raped was typical rc 28-3

The schedules were comical.

1992 A&M was 12-1. Literally the only ranked team on the regular schedule the whole year was #20 Stanford and Slocum beat them 10-7. Got crushed by ND in the bowl 28-3.

1994 A&M was 10-0-1 and the only ranked opponent all year was beating #15 OU. NCAA bowl and TV ban. The tie was against (1-9-1) death-penalty-level SMU.

Bragging about wins when you play ONE bottom half of the poll ranked team a year is something else. Then twice in 7 years were banned from bowls and lost most others.

RC had 1 bowl victory. He never beat teams who had equal or better talent

He was the beneficiary of a weak SWC and the momentum Jackie created.

The real problem was forcing Jackie out.

People need to give it up here.

While RC was once successful at A&M, it reached the point where it was clearly apparent that his time had come and gone. He was not capable of taking the program to the next level and it had reached the point where he had regressed to a lower level.

Now, I am well aware that none of the coaches hired since his departure have reached that next level either. But it's better to keep trying someone different rather than keeping someone who has clearly proven that they aren't capable.

If we had fired him when we should have, we never would have gotten Fran, and who knows how things would have gone.

RC Slocum was the last A&M football coach to play for a Conference Championship back in 1998.
This thread can be retired once Coach Elko get this football program to Atlanta.

RC Slocum was a great coach, but he did not get run off too early. The problem back then was that OU and Texas hired much better coaches and those programs zoomed past Texas A&M.
