Wondering how much we have spent on visits in general, but seems like a hefty amount for a weekend with 9 recruits. Albeit it seems to be paying off. $280k for one weekend and $300k + for another.

Not saying that we don't. Just wondering what A&M is spending if TU is spending that much. Granted, I would think spending $30k plus per recruit and their families is a bit more difficult in CS rather than Austin.

Four seasons Austin blows. Worst Four Seasons and not impressive hotel really despite name. Austin has nicer places like Zaza or proper. Why does media give us so much criticism and yet Texas and others get a pass. They say we buy players then this article is angled to brag Texas has money. So frustrating they are media darlings. We have the most Fortune 500 CEOs, we got money, perhaps as much as them, we aren't poor Aggies anymore, and somehow we just suck and our program is in shambles because we lost last week. Their program has been one win better than Northwestern in the past decade. Let's just win, get no respect, and understand if we lose, we suck and Texas can do the same, or worse, and Espin it as better. Makes sense.

Well, if y'all read the article you would have found this little tidbit: tu ain't even close to being the biggest dollar hog in recruiting. Not even close. Try 13th. The Georgia Bulldogs took top rank by outspending the Longhorns 3 fold!!

Quote:

Athletic Director U and INFLCR published NCAA financial reports that showed Texas spent $1,275,368 on recruiting for the 2019 fiscal year. That was the 13th most spent on recruiting that year, which was led by Georgia at $3,676,858.

BTW: if you follow that link, Texas A&M is 6th with an expenditure of $1,673,204. After Georgia comes:

  • Alabama
  • Tennessee
  • Clemson
  • Arkansas --- yeah, say that again out loud! ARKANSAS!!!
  • Texas A&M

And just exactly how did Arkansas get into this fray?... dunno about you, but Sam Pittman coming from Georgia to Arkansas sure looks to be a plausible answer here. And so far, that formula is paying off for him. QED, Ags... it's QED.
Cotton79

To be precise, Arky spent $1,931,026... 15% MORE than the Aggies.

And for further comparison, the Razorbacks spent 51% more than the Longhorns.

The primary root of all this is Nick Saban. After all, both Kirby Smart and Steve Sarkisian - and Jimbo Fisher, for that matter - all seconded to the Saban master. And now we're seeing that branch to secondary levels, like Sam Pittman.

Soooo... why didn't the ESPN guys writing/editing this article focus on that as the headline. Hmmm....

Among the highlights of the visit, according to The Athletic: a full spread in their rooms at the Four Seasons Austin, a photo shoot at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium, a trip to driving range Top Golf, multiple lavish meals and a breakfast at the home of coach Steve Sarkisian.

Chump change. I think you can bill your own price if you include a photo shot and breakfast at Sark's house. Mabye there were gallons of Mimosas?!

Nothing in that list gets you to $600K. In years past, that kind of expenditure included white envelopes full of cash. Today, it is part of NIL and should be pretty open.

Sips shouldn't really be bragging about 13th in money.

Its not a coincidence that those schools listed are some of the richest, most powerful schools in the entire country when it comes to football.

They know how the game is meant to be played.

In either city I would have a hard time spending $30k for my family there for the weekend. Even if trying to be lavish. Seriously don't know how you do that. Even if in a hotels that's $2k per night at even 3 nights. How do you spend $24k on food and fun around town. Did they each get stacks to make it rain in the strip club? Trying to come up with ways to blow that much money in a weekend anywhere but Vegas and can't think of how.

That's the same thinking that created a lack of competitiveness on facilities that both Bob Gates and Bill Byrne commented on regarding RC's promotion to special assistant. I'm fine with demonetizing football at Texas A&M. But we have a very long repayment tail on bonds funded by football and committed expense spend that Covid proved with a $26 million advanced payment by the conference office is very difficult to staunch.

We could further note the University sells itself by putting many if not most students in significant student debt without reasonable means in all cases to pay off that debt. And many of our investment choices have extended concessions to developers that in essence disallow a deleveraging conversation on student population.

And then there are the fans that delusionally demand national championship progress and claim marketing to recruits and paying them isn't necessary AT THE SAME TIME.

Not that there is anything wrong with that…

I'm not certain you could even spend that much on a weekend in College Station?? At first I thought maybe with a private jet, but the university already owns 2 I think.

Even with 10 people, I don't think you could spend that much.

The Athletic article spells it out pretty specifically. Remember this is for up to 4 family members per recruit, as well as all the Horns coaches and staff that were waiting on them all weekend. Some excerpts:

Horns $300K Recruiting Weekend

Texas spent $46,696 on the 34 rooms it booked for recruits, family members and some UT coaches and staffers.

The lunch buffet tacked on another $17,319.71. Add in the $1,813.74 spent on the custom cakes and snacks and the Longhorns cleared $65,000 before the recruits stepped foot on campus.

a dinner buffet in a club area on the eighth floor of DKR. The guest list hit triple digits when including visitors, Texas' full-time coaching staff, spouses, recruiting staff and support staff. The meal, complete with cocktails, beer, wine, flatware rental, a bartender's fee and an ice sculpture, cost $29,129.40.

While recruits hit the town, coaches, spouses and recruits' families trekked to the J.W. Marriott for a parent social, where the drinks flowed. The final receipt length rivaled that of your local CVS. After more than $6,000 worth of liquor, $756 of hors d'oeuvres, a smattering of beer and wine, a 20 percent service charge and a $2,400 rental fee, the pool bar tab came out to $11,880.

Day 2 began back at the stadium for breakfast at the UT Club (buffet, omelet station, liquor and wine added up to $10,226)

In the afternoon, recruits got in some hacks at TopGolf. "The kids kind of took on the golf and the dads sat with some of the coaches," Randle said. Plenty of food and drinks were on hand: three types of fajitas, guacamole and queso, rice, black beans, desserts, beer and liquor. Total tab for 75 guests: $9,497.72.

On Saturday night, the group splurged at III Forks, an upscale steakhouse just a few blocks from the Four Seasons. Attendees ate enough to get the meat sweats: Forty-six 7-ounce lobsters, 34 bone-in ribeyes, 26 8-ounce filets, 17 New York strips, sea bass, chicken fried lobster, lobster mac and cheese, the list went on.
Chris Pilot ordered the Tomahawk ribeye, which rang up at $135. After fees and a $6,000 tip, the III Forks bill totaled $36,900.

While recruits went out again, parents would cap the night at another social at the W Austin hotel, just a short walk from the Four Seasons. the Saturday night social totaled $31,628.75.

You know how much national advertising you can buy for $280,000? (not much...) If it helped land him, they made out like bandits. Longhorns continue to reap millions in publicity (like they needed ESPN to have a reason to talk about them....)

If you're a national top 100 recruit you fly on a private jet. This has been going on since the early 90s.... maybe before. You stay at the nicest hotel in the city. Eat at the best restaurants. And drinks are all paid for at the club. And dances are paid for at the strip club.

It adds up.

In summation, that's not a hefty amount at all and Jimbo and the boys need to act accordingly.
Also the rumor that last year's class was bought for $4M seemed insane at the time, but actually might not be that far off.

This. Much easier to spend a ton of money in Austin than BCS. There are far more entertainment options.

The Four Seasons and a party boat on Town Lake in downtown Austin will always be more expensive and higher profile than a party boat on the Brazos and a weekend at the The George.

Where do recruits normally get put up in BCS? The George is the nicest place I can think of.
