I wanted some takes on some things i've been noodling on. I feel like chase lane is reliable and decent but chris marshall had almost triple the amount of touchdowns that evan stewart had and only played 6 more games of football and before that never played the game at all... does marshall take over starting reps by the end of the season? I kind of hope so. Also Jaylon Jones to me has blown a lot of plays and just doesn't hussle really... does denver harris or someone else start getting jaylons reps? Just wanted to toss around some thoughts to see if anyone feels the same.

I would expect to see appreciable playing time for both Stewart and Marshall. How much will depend on catch consistency and route running. I don't think one will be limited in touches if they play to their potential. But I agree, Marshall could end up taking over reps from Lane if he is productive over the top which is where we need him to be. Jaylon Jones is a wildcard. He has the experience and has done some really good things, but I've also seen him take some plays off and get surprised. But if he is dialed in then he can hold down his own. Will need to see Denver play at the college speed to form an opinion. It's a tough spot to play as a freshmen, so experience usually wins out.

Haven't seen any dog in Jaylon, and he's had plenty of opportunity.

Not sure if a consensus top 50 High School prospect sneaks up on anybody!

But I get what you mean in terms of he wasn't our top ranked WR recruit. The only game I saw him play was the all star game and he, like a few other Aggie commits, was a man among boys. He's gonna be a stud!

I appreciate the hours and the work that Chase Lane has put into this program, but he is probably the 5th most talented WR in that room at best. I personally would like to see Smith, Stewart, Marshall, Moose and YB on the field before Lane. He will get the week 1 start and somebody will have to take it from him, but it would really surprise me if he finishes the season getting starting snaps. He just doesn't have the physical tools that the other guys have.

Jaylon Jones seems to struggle the most when he is asked to play man coverage. He has made some plays in zone and from what I've seen he's a pretty good tackler. I've always thought he would make a good high safety, but maybe he doesn't have the straight line speed or vision to play that spot at the college level. Only a coach would know that. He is a good football player, but I expect teams to continue to try and target him in one on ones. I think somebody will have to truly shine to take his job away for good, but we could see some personnel rotation in different sets.

I think Jones is more likely to hold onto his starting spot than Lane is.

Marshall did not get much looks until his senior year when he took off, then his performance at the all star game put him in the top 50. He reminds me a lot of Mike Evans with how aggressive he is when the ball is in the air.

Stewart is special and will start day one, just a rare talent

Eleventy billion.

Did Denver miss some/most of fall camp? Seems like I haven't heard much about him lately. I think Looch said Smoke had missed time due to injury, but I really thought he'd be discussed more (thought he was one of the most athletic of that recruiting class and a 5* before he committed to us)

Lane is a dependable receiver, we've needed that...He gets open. Maybe not flashy, but certainly handy.

Chase Lane was great to meet at the MW game. Was super nice to my boys when approached for pictures etc.

Seems like a hard worker and has good hands and dependable. But my big problem is he does NOT really get open. Getting separation is one of his big issues. If he would get open or is schemed open, I think he could have some big plays.

re: Marshall vs. Lane.

From past experience Jimbo certainly seems to favor a guy like Lane. Experienced and consistent vs. more raw but higher ceiling.

According to all reports out of camp, Noah sounds like the sneaky one.

Which is it, 5th best or 6th best?

Only Smith has had more PT & opportunities than Lane. We have, allegedly, a ton of WR talent. So far, our O hasn't taken advantage of that talent.

But another season awaits.....

I just think we already know what Lane is. To me he's a pretty decent floor but fairly low ceiling guy. He has a ton of experience which is valuable, but I think he is physically limited relative to some of the other guys in that position group.

Smith is obviously a starter. Stewart appears to also be a starter. My point was I personally would like to see Moose, Marshall and even Yulkeith Brown get more snaps in that 3rd WR spot or whatever the rotation becomes because I think those guys have more potential to be explosive players. All Moose does is score TDs when he catches the ball. Marshall seems like he has the "go up and get it" ability that not a lot of guys have. YB can flat ass run.

Lane will get the week 1 start and will be a starter until someone takes it from him. And I won't even argue against that because I think he's earned it. Selfishly as a fan I would like to see those other guys instead, and I don't think that's a wild take. Over the course of the season I expect one or two of those younger guys to pass him up because of their athletic ability. Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

All of my opinions on Lane pretty much apply to Preston as well, but the thread isn't about Preston.

Before and after

Bro with an upgrade at qb and Jimbo taking the reigns off the playbook and Coley coaching em up now and all that experience plus the young studs were gonna look so different at wide receiver it's....like wow dude I'm so pumped idk what I'm gonna do when Stewart catches his first drag route to the house and then Noah Thomas gets single coverage on a fly route and then Preston catching screens and just rolling smoke through the defense on his way to more tuddies and then chase lane grabbing the clutch and snagging in sideline dimes and those intermediate ins and outs and I haven't even talked about Moose or yulkieth a.k.a "yuletide carrols" with another year of experience and feel for the offense sans training wheels.

Friggin Devin Price...he could start at a lot of places. Dont ask me how I know. Have you seen his dad?

I didn't even talk about anias "they hate us cuz they anias" "shoohz" "plead the 5th" smith. Imagine a pop fly sweep reverse where sub zero gets the ball then flips it to achane on the end around after he was sent in motion to the other side.

Dude.

This is gonna be sick

Friggen Maleski...looks like a real labhart out there. A real Neiderhofer on the field.

and speaking of great white hope..

Lane being on the field now is not by a good thing he's the 5th best receiver at best. Works hard etc is great but we need difference makers and we have those in better more talented receivers.

Maleski is much more talented than labhart. He chose to walkon forgoing schollies elsewhere labhart was a womens basketball practice player. That being said labhart ended up with a great year. Maleski is good and I expected him to play at some point.

I agree. In this instance I would rather see one of the young super talented bucks get on the field. Less downside for mistakes, insane upside for athletic play making.

Yall sleep on my boy BIGG CHASE LANE all you want. A healthy lane might surprise some people all im saying
beerad12man

Chase will play, and play a lot, and be a fixture all year long. Marshall missed a lot of time this fall, and is pretty raw. Heck, I might say Noah Thomas would be more likely to get starting reps at this time. But ultimately the season is long, and we will see how they both progress.

Jaylon had a very good FR year. Yes, he had some blown coverages like all freshman. He was dinged all of last year, and by all accounts is a better player this fall. I think he's going to be very, very good for us this year.
beerad12man
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And I firmly believe Lane is a lot better than people think. Another guy who was injured all of last year, and reportedly had his best offseason this fall. He had 450(or around there) yards as a RFR on a 9-1 Orange bowl team. To think he can't and/or wont' keep his starting job as a RJR when he's better now is quite funny. Sure, if Marshall or Thomas just end up being a stud THIS year and can't be kept off the field, he may have his PT reduced. But I doubt that. I think Lane will be quite the regular in our WR rotation.
