At 73.

He was the fullback in tu's wishbone and what made it such a success in the late 1960s. Recruited in 1967 from Bridge City, he was a huge success in both high school and college.
He largely eschewed further football endeavors after college and decided to settle down and raise his family.

will have to share this with my father.

my dad hit wooster head on while playing defensive end for the Ags and their collision was so dramatic it cracked my fathers helmet right down the middle. my dad has it up in his living room.

ND did have good luck against Wooster in Cotton Bowl as he played the game with torn rib cartridge and good ole Darrell let them use plenty pain killers so he could stay in game. He did not have feeling in his arm. Great player although he played against my high school and then A&M. He remained a humble person even with all the fame.

I remember going to the State Championship game to watch Bridge City defeat the Mckinney Lions in Waco in 1966, if I remember right their only loss that season was to the Nederland Bulldogs.

Hate to see these guys leaving us, no matter who they played for.

I may have just been a kid, but I remember all of them. That was a fabulous era for college football.

Not in the 1970 CB. 1971 rematch saw ND win 24-11, Worster was held to 46 yards on 16 carries. Fumbled 7 times if memory serves. Team fumbled 9 and lost 5.

T&P. This is what I always found funny about the Woody Hayes quote on passing. Only 3 things happen when you run the ball and 2 of them aren't good either.

Apropos of that era, tu defensive end Diron Talbert was asked if he ever went to Texas games after he wrapped up his NFL career.
"Not really. I missed 19 hunting seasons playing football. That's a lot to catch up on."

Many years ago, as a kid, I was standing outside the OST restaurant in Bandera. Had an A&M t-shirt on and was carrying a football. This group walked out of Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar saloon across the street. They were going to the OST to eat.

One guy stopped and asked me for my football. I tossed it to him and he started asking if I liked football, Aggies, etc. Small talk. Then he said, "I made my living in college carrying this thing. Carried it a lot." Introduced himself as Steve Wooster. He never said anything about being a Longhorn. Just walked in the OST with his group. Was very nice.

My Dad, '49, knew exactly who he was.

Have no idea if it was really him but was a neat story for a 12-yr-old.

As I recall James Street was the QB, Bertelson was one HB, can't recall the other and Wooster FB. It was something to watch.

My dad used to talk about watching him play in high school. Legendary. He put BC on the map.

I got news for you, Texas signed the top 7 at every position. There really wasn't recruiting in the state until scholly limits, they all went to Texas. Not to mention, College Station and no girls vs. Austin and a lot of girls. The Ags had two hands tied behind their back. It sure wasn't easy being an Aggie fan back in the day.

Maybe one of the Koys from Bellville, Ted or Ernie? I think one of them went to vet school at A&M after their undergrad.

I am trying to remember when the fullback was the most dominant player on the field. I can't think of it.

That era was the last of the dominant rusher from the FB position: Wooster, Roosevelt Leaks, Earl Campbell, George Woodard to name a few. Robert Wilson for A&M in 1990 could also tote the rock but the TB was the featured ball carrier in that offense.

It is strange that very few of their running backs ever made it in the NFL. Gilbert and Wooster never got a sniff. Royal would sign a hundred guys a year just so he wouldn't have to play them. The rules changed in the early 70's and Royal quickly retired. Coaching became much more difficult because you couldn't stock pile talent.

Earl Cambell played halfback at UT, never fullback. When Fred Ackers took over he played tailback in the I.

Wrong. Campbell played fullback in 75 and 76. Akers moved him to TB in 77.
