Pretty clear from Jimbo's presser that he's saying he, himself, and the program didn't buy players. At same time says he knows nothing about collective, what they do etc.

Ok, we're mostly not idiots. Obviously the collective does the buying. Just like every other schools' collective, at least those smart enough to figure it out.

Saban either messed up by not choosing his words more carefeully by saying it was A&M who did the buying instead of the collective, or he has a plan. I suppose he knows what he's doing.

Saban was wrong.

You can say he chose his words poorly, but his choice of words Resulted in his making a false statement.

Saban felt threatened enough to break the "gentlemen's agreement " these coaches have on acquiring recruits. Now the floodgates are open.

I am AMAZED at saban's unabashed hypocrisy in saying bama has never paid a player. where's a lightning strike when you need one.

No, YOU'RE wrong. It is explicitly against State law in Texas to offer NIL deals to prospective players. Saban said that A&M bought those players, past tense. That means they were bought and paid for BEFORE signing day, or that promises were made BEFORE signing day. That is false. Here's a good article on Texas law. Even the "collectives" can't buy a player before signing day. Again, against State law. That's why Jimbo is so mad, rightfully so.

You are incorrect, "the collective" did nothing with recruits as that is against state law. NIL deals are only formalized after they are on campus.

"A&M bought every player, we didn't buy one". I don't think he got his words mixed up.

This fails when you consider Saban said that they did it "right", when they'd have been doing the same thing you're claiming A&M did. Both offloaded the process, but then Saban wants to pin it on Jimbo & A&M...while acting like his approach was all that different (keep in mind, this is the same guy that came out talking about how much Bryce Young received)

I think its pretty obvious Saban is a little worried that his stranglehold on college football could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

If that is correct tu offering prospective OLs $50,000/year did violate State law.

This thread reminds me of a line from Fiddler on the Roof.

Avram: "He's right and he's right. How can they both be right?"
Tevye: "You know? You are also right."

Saban may be saying these items to avoid current recruiting issues.

Give the perception that they are the only ones doing this right, while also telling Alabama business men that he needs more money. He is recruiting NIL money and letting kids know that if they go to other schools, they may be in trouble.

Recruiting is now identifying talent in HS players and working business men to raise NIL money.

So next time Bama has the #1 class, I'll just assume they were all bought. As a matter of fact, I'll just go ahead and assume their past #1 classes were bought.

It's a free country and all.

Little did I think that when I saw Tyus Edney going coast to coast against Mizzou in 1995, that it would be connected to Jimbo Fisher blasting Nick Saban in a press conference in 2022.

I'm trying to figure out Saban's game, here. He's always calculated in such things. I'm trying to figure out what is he trying to get done. What is he concerned about.

He often warns things, like, "Is this [fast tempo] really what we want our game to become," and then he goes out and does that.

Is he setting himself up to start "buying every player" and then point to us later and claim he was just doing what we'd already done?

Well, if that is the case, his method and delivery didn't work. Maybe Saban just needs to say, "Hey, your wallets need to be opened a little wider". Too bad direct speaking has gone away from this country. .... Something something mean tweets..

Whiney is how I would describe it. With Saban's accomplishments to date, why does he need to whine to a bunch of businessmen and the media about A&M. There's no need for him to go there. The fact that he did says a lot about his worry about A&M's trending upward and potentially past his Crimson Tide..

Keys, that makes sense. That would be per his prior, established M.O.

Is there more to it?

People give Saban too much credit. He's not calculated in his statements. It seems like he makes news saying dumb stuff several times a year. He's just an old curmudgeon.

Gary Patterson did exactly what you described. He literally told boosters they need to open their wallets wider and did not mince words. He got fired and that was part of the reason for his firing.

Saban knows exactly what has been done over many years to entice players. Sure he started a good program with a lot of help from locals. Auburn and the tide have agreed long ago not to rat on each other for they both have recruited players with understandings like laundry money, jobs for their parents, the police hands off of the good players, etc. Just like the sips did in Austin. Now that there is a new and legal way to recruit and Saban was not prepared then he cries foul. He himself stated his new QB last year had a million dollars before he ever played a down. Who did that deal???
PhatMack19
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I few years ago I saw a poster that Bama showed their recruits that showed their recent draft picks and the dollar amounts of their NFL contracts.

Jimbo can't offer NIL deals, but he can damn sure show recruits what our current players are making.
