Trying to think of who could compete.

Mid 70's had some ridiculous linebacker units (Simonini, TenNapel, Jackson, et al).

2012 O-Line room had multiple 1st round NFL draft choices ( Joeckel, Matthews, Ogbuehi, Ifedi)

There were late 80's, early 90's running back rooms that were sick.

But for overall depth, this D-Line unit next year looks - insane.

Starting defensive ends
Jahzion Harris (RS FR,4*) 6-4, 220
Fadil Diggs (RS So-4*) 6-5, 260
Backups:
Elijah Jeudy (RS Fr,4*) 6-3, 295
Donnell Harris (RS So, 4*) 6-3, 220

Starting defensive tackles:
Shemar Turner (So-5*) 6-4, 285
McKinnley Jackson (Jr-4*) 6-2, 325
Backups:
Isaiah Raikes (Jr-3*) 6-1, 320
Walter Nolen (Fr-5*) 6-4, 325

Also in the room

Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (Fr-5*) 6-3, 280
Anthony Lucas (Fr-4*) 6-5, 300
Shemar Stewart (Fr-5*) 6-6, 272
Lebus Overton (Fr-5*) 6-5 265
Tunmise Adeleye (RS Fr, 4*) 6-3, 295
Marcus Burris (So, 4*) 6-4, 285

These 5* have to get into the rotation. Great teams can rotate two entire units in. Can we rotate three?

Coach Price has gotta be like a kid in a candy store.

maybe the 2023 dl will be but I think this group needs some seasoning to compare with the best of the past.

That's a ridiculous boatload of DL talent and you didn't mention some others like White, Regis, Mowry, A Jones and Sylla.

That's a heck of a pipeline, but they are likely too young to be a "best" DL unit. That's a position where it takes time to transform their bodies.

Didn't the 2012 or 13 OL have 3 or 4 future 1st-round draft picks on it?

Hard to beat that.

Way too many "Fr" and "So" designations there to make that judgement quite yet.

The 1975 defensive unit was number one in the nation in "Total" defense.
I'd be delighted if they can match that.
If so, we'll probably be playing for the national championship.

The 2011 QB room was even better: Tannehill, JFF, Showers and Matt Joeckel

I'm going to guess that the OP suffers from recency bias and/or is young. To date, this DL is nothing compared to the early to mid 90s DL. However, I hold out hope that for the next three to four years they dominate college and win a Natty.

On paper this DL is about as elite as it gets. OP's obviously making the assumption that translates to the field. I think it will, but we'll have to see. I think they'll be very good this year and absolutely dominant in 2023 and 2024.

think adeleye and lucas will be higher up in the pecking order.

Exactly what I was thinking. Adeleye will be in the 2 deep if not starting in my completely uneducated opinion.

That circa 2000 DL of Rocky Bernard and Ty Warren was stout.

So as crowded as that room is you forgot a few.
Malick Sylla Fr- 4* (6-6 230)
Enai White Fr 4* (6-5 230)

We need to start a gofund me page for Coach Price to get a bigger dinning room table and to upgrade his grill.

McKinnley Jackson still has his court case which actually got bumped up to a felony.

If the ENTIRE starting defense gets drafted in the nfl, then they at least match the '75-'76 defense.

I don't think it will be best ever until the lineup looks more like this:

Starting DL:
Stewart -So
Turner -Jr
Nolan -So
Adeleye -So

Backups:
Dindy -So
Overton -So
Lucas-So
Diggs -Junior

Situational rotation players :
A Harris and Raikes

Other legit notables fighting for a spot:
Burris and Jeudy.

1970s linebacker corps was best ever unit. FACT:

Not only were all 3 starters drafted, ALL THREE BACKUPS were drafted too!

Mid to late 70's, mid to late 80's, recency bias is a great way to put it...They actually did it, let's actually see something first...We had some talent last year that chose to go half-speed, jury is out.

"We"??? You mean your t-sips? Actually i think ALL of your "talent" was operating at half-speed!

First of all, I always tend to wait until players have actually played before nominating them for "best ever", and the same applies here.

However, I am HOPING they reach that status, since they'll have difficulty being better than the D-line of '75 or '94. Tank Marshall, Jimmy Dean, and Edgar Fields would be tough to beat.

Wasnt Jacob Green in that group also or was he a year later? I was pretty young then.

The other starting tackle on the team was Blake Schwarz.

Jacob Green played on the '79 team that beat tu 13-7 at Kyle, and was a senior that year.

I remember because a writer from the Chronicle the next day said "Jacob Green spent enough time in the Longhorn's backfield to get a letter in football"!
