Sometimes guys just aren't that good or that fast…

It doesn't ALWAYS mean they don't have the required work ethic or desire…

Sometimes "we are who we are"…. Lots of athletes peak in High School, a bunch peak in College… a very few go on to the NFL…

Hell, I peaked in JV basketball… Not because I didn't want to pay the price… Just the way God made me…

Thanks Mrs. Wydermyer

Well, the people who peak early or "aren't that good or that fast" don't typically get drafted in the first 3 rounds of the NFL.

I was thinking Jimbo got a lot out him for his skillset. Would like to see what Jimbo can get out of Cupp and Johnson.

He's got a good skill set but his season fell in regards to production on the field in the last year. Combined with nothing spectacular on measurable it's gonna be tough.

He was very productive and kind of a tough match up for his first two years. Fell off year 3. He showed outstanding hands year 1 and particularly year 2. Showed just the opposite in year 3.

His issues weren't all physical.

His lack of focus simply fueled his drop in athleticism.

He seemed to get open just fine against Bama who is loaded with fast NFL players.

Somebody is going to take a chance on him with a late round pick or as an undrafted free agent. It took him one quarter of a second longer to run 40 yards than expected. Yet, on the field during the first 2 years he looked like Kyle Pitts vs similar competition. Last year, he wasn't as good with Calzada throwing to him.

It's hard to see how he went from possible first rounder to undrafted. It just means he will have to prove he belongs.

It just might be that it takes more to be an NFL player than a college player.

After taking a few years long break from the NFL, for a reason which you can guess, my dad tuned in to a few games this year when he was just bored. The two that I remember him wanting to talk about were the Chargers-Chiefs OT game and the Chiefs-Bills OT game.

He loves to watch Travis Kelce. The TE position has evolved immensely since he last paid much attention in like 2016. While Kelce really does have great speed for a a TE, even a receiving TE, he's still by no means a fast skill player. My dad gets a kick out of Kelce's ability to just find an open patch of grass and let Patty get the ball there in a hurry. It seems to be true for a lot of TEs, they aren't torching their linebacker, nickel, or safety with speed, agility, or route running, and not a lot of them have the hands to Moss guys. Obviously a few of them do, like Kelce, Kittle and Gronk, but Wydermyer probably isn't going to ever be a top 5 TE. Just because he can't be top 5 doesn't mean he can't have a great career.

The Cowboys just tagged a mediocre (in my opinion) TE and let a great pass rusher, which is a high value position, Randy Gregory, walk. I'm not saying that speed isn't a huge part of being successful, it is, even without speed, Wydermyer did great in college. He had a knack for finding that open patch of green. He won't do it as fast as Kelce, or have as good of hands, but he can still do it. It's not like Wydermyer has no chance, he's just going to have to do the things he can do well flawlessly.

Kyle Pitts just beat people. Trask could throw fades and let Pitts just burn a dude and then catch a ball on his head. It wasn't until a few weeks into that season that I learned Pitts wasn't actually a receiver, and for the draft, a lot of people evaluated him like one. He could run all the routes the receivers could.

Wydermyer isn't a great comparison, in my opinion. They produced some similar stats, barring this last season but even then, I don't think it's a very great comparison. Pitts was a lock in the top 10 of last year's draft by professional graders. Even in Wydermyer's prime, he had a mid-first ceiling in my unprofessional opinion.

While Pitts could just beat dudes even when he was a focal point of defenses, Wydermyer is better at just punishing teams for their mistakes, especially in a zone. He just kinda slips through zones to open patches in the defense.

I do definitely agree with the first part though. I kind of expect him to be a 6th round pick still. Sure the measurements weren't there, but the tape was. He played 2 great years of football and a decent 3rd one with a struggling QB. There were a ton of drops though, and while many blame Calzada, I'm afraid that may have only been part of the problem. Good NFL QB's will rip a ball into a tight window, so Wydermyer needs to clean those up, though Calzada never helped him. My concern is that Wydermyer's hand isn't fully recovering from last spring's injury when he cut it really badly. If he sliced the tendons and nerves and things, I have heard of injuries of that never being the same, like Jaylon Smith never regaining total feeling in his foot after his knee got obliterated.

Don't start with that. Jalen had lots of drops that a NFL caliber TE should catch. He simply wasn't as good in year 3 as he was in year 2.
Let's go, Brandon!

Because he was never actually a "possible first rounder" to any NFL team.
