A teammate, Randy Sims,
also now deceased (a community leader in B/CS), was a very good pass receiver and a favorite target for QB Charlie Milstead. At 10 years old in 1959, I was following the Aggie football season and Thanksgiving was nearing. I was impressed with Randy Sims' receiving ability so I wrote a letter to Mr. Milstead suggesting a game plan, that he "hit Sims in the end zone".
.......I attended the Thanksgiving Day game on Kyle Field, sitting about 10 or 15 rows up, pressbox side, 20 yard line in the south end. Mr. Milstead threw a pass to Randy Sims and he caught the ball and came down straddling the goal line, one foot in the south end zone for a touchdown. The play happened right in front of me.
.......As a side note, in that same quarter Mr. Randy Sims set a world record with a 52 yard field goal kick between the uprights in the south end zone and the Aggies lead at the half, 10-0.
.......After the game, Mr. Milstead replied to my letter and included a news paper clipping of the game with photos of that play and he wrote, "Thanks for the tip". I never believed my letter influenced the play calling, but rather, I was impressed with how gracious he was.
