The NIL genie is out of the lamp. It appears there is a dearth of NCAA requirements constraining amounts and methods of remuneration. For now, it's the wild west.

The NCAA knows they will likely lose in court as soon as they attempt to (once again) restrict an adult's ability to capitalize on their own name and image.

This is what everyone knew it would be.

Texas spent 4 million on one player is word per Texas sources and 250k gets this kind of attention? Even if true seems very strange.

What I'd really like to know is how does a 5-7 team land a top 5 recruiting class??

Surely they're paying players and somebody wants to look into this, right??

It's kinda sorta not. "Name, image, likeness" are specific terms that related to the value of person's endorsement or sponsorship of goods or services. There are specific laws, especially in CA, that set forth a person's rights to in their NIL.

That's not what's happening here. There's no way the value of a largely unknown (to the general public) high school football player approaches these numbers. This is pay-for-play, which is not part of the ruling, and it's killing the sport.

How can anyone tell a private company how much they should value the endorsement of any individual?

And how could something that has always been a part of the sport be killing the sport?

Correct. This is the box that was opened. You cannot police it now.

My understanding is that you cannot use NIL as a recruiting tool. Whatever that means. And if that is the case that is again something you cannot police. If recruits ask, won't coaches tell recruits what similar caliber players are getting? Is that using as a recruiting tool. Only way not to use it as a recruiting tool would be to prohibit signing any deal before enrolled in school and to prohibit even talking about it.

Yep

Ncaa has no control over this

The ruling was made and the ncaa has no choice but to stay out of the way

If we're being honest, there is no way we put together a class like this without NIL.

But with that being said, who gives a crap why they come here? Even if it's strictly for the money, what difference does it make?

The NCAA should have no control over NIL. You should be paid what your name and image are worth on the open market. The PGA doesn't tell Tiger Woods he can't make more than x amount from Nike and NFL doesn't limit how many State Farm commercials Aaron Rodgers can do. It's the wild west because that's how it should be.

So, just when did Notre Dame develop a social conscience for the rest of college football? Notre Dame has, for decades, acted solely in the interest of Notre Dame football, with absolutely no consideration given to the effect their policies and decisions have on the rest of the college football world. Back in the days before ESPN, college football television rights were regulated under a fragile agreement which created the College Football Association, whereby 67 schools pooled their television rights so that regional telecasts and equal distribution of revenue could keep the big dogs from dominating television broadcasts. Then, in 1991, Notre Dame turned the college football world on its ear by breaking away from the CFA and signing a $38 million deal with NBC to broadcast all its home games nationally, basically telling the rest of college football to go pound sand. When the college football playoff system was devised, Notre Dame lobbied for special considerations because... Notre Dame! There may be a few schools schools out there that can claim the moral authority to object to the influence of big money in college football, but Notre Dame is certainly not one of them. When it comes to pushing all the little guys off to the side, Notre Dame has always been the biggest bully on the block.

Disagree completely. Our last two classes were ranked 6 and 4. What is the difference between 4 and 1, just a couple of players, albeit highly ranked 5* players.

You don't recruit off the current year / season, you recruit off the previous season, a season in which we finished #4 and won the Orange Bowl and were probably the 2nd or 3rd best team in the country, only loss to Bama.

Walter Nolen said if his decision was based on $ / NIL he would have gone to UT (the real UT in Knoxville, not cow).

Our class benefitted from issues and coaching changes with our direct recruiting rivals, namely OU and LSU. Without those issues at OU and LSU maybe we don't get the FL DL or Perkins, maybe Nolen decides if he isn't going to UT he goes to Bama or UGA. If we lose 2 5* kids we probably don't have the #1 class, just the #2 - #4 class.

Jimbo has ALWAYS been an elite recruiter. He is selling our entire program, what we can be, as evidenced by the 2020 season and Bama win, Kyle Field atmosphere, elite level facilities, fan support, etc., etc. I'm sure NIL played some part in it, but not as much as you think and not as much as all these internet message board idiots are making up pure speculation and fantasy about.

If we had finished #2 then there would be NONE of all this BS, and that is completely ridiculous. Based on all the rankings and metrics, the real ??? should be how cow could finish even in the Top 25 in recruiting rankings after a 5-7 record with an L to Kansas and a coach who has never accomplished anything as a HC.
