Defenses should now be allowed to blow up QB's initiating a slide. QB's if you have any issues with this new rule you can take it up with Cody Pickett.

I don't agree with your remedy. That should be an unsportsmanlike penalty.

They should just mark that guy down right there. The play is over at the spot he starts the slide. That's the spot he started the slide.

or maybe the refs should have just blown it dead like the rule states they were supposed to do? just a thought.

Play should be stopped at the beginning of the slide. Unsportsmanlike conduct should be the penalty. The question is should it be a dead ball penalty? Or should it be enforced from the beginning of the slide in the course of play?

Or Delay of Game against the QB

Just another blown call. Play was over when he started to slide

It's a BS tactic that plays on the safety aspect of today's game. It should be an unsportsmanlike penalty, loss of down, 10yrds back from LOS.

Yep

College football officiating is terrible

Play should have been reviewed and overturned, putting the ball where he started the slide

I'm ok with it
Defenders should be making contact with their hands at a minimum after a slide.

I don't think that was a fake slide. I think he just out did himself on a cut and saved it.

Literally looked like an unathletic cut, that worked.

Not sure his intention was to fake the slide. It's possible he just changed his mind after seeing he had more open room to run.

No way that should be allowed.
Once a QB goes into a slide he is down .. not where he slides but where he starts the slide, he is down at that spot. He is giving himself up.
Defenders cannot make contact with QB, any forceable contact results in a penalty.

Play should of been blown dead

That's like saying.. I didn't mean to hold I just got beat and tried to prevent him sacking my QB

Doesn't matter

This should have been blown dead and a penalty and loss of down due to fact that this defeats the whole player safety argument for sliding.
Bad officiating.
Either have a slide rule in place for safety....or let the QB's suffer the consequences.
This needs to be stopped immediately because you will now see a bunch of copycats...and the defense should not be penalized when they blow up the copycats.

I agree. Play should have been blown dead.

Good for him making a play and out thinking the defense. But that should have been blown dead. But still a good athletic play.

This is the first time I have seen it from this angle, he was definitely starting to slide and if the refs had blown it dead I don't think anyone would have argued.

It's probably something they will look at in the off season and start to call in the future, this is the first time anyone has seen this.

Is there a clear definition of a slide in the book? If so, did this match it? If yes, then it's a bad call; if no, you have someone using their head to make a good play. The rule about defenseless ball carriers has what some would call "unintended consequences...."

I say open the runner up for the regular hits (i.e. not classified as defenseless) and let them take the consequences. Done improperly, the fake slide will cause enough injuries to act as a disincentive --and not bad hits, mind you, but doing it wrong and rolling an ankle or twisting a knee.

Both the defensive back behind him and the safety froze as he was about to slide because of the penalty that would have been called, likely targeting, if they hit him in his slide. Ball dead right there and delay of game for continuing to run with the ball after play is dead, and then a second unsportsman like conduct for the celebration after the non-TD. loss of down and total of 20 yards back from the spot of the downed ball at the start of the slide.

Football is going to choke itself to death on rules, replays, and the like. The game was a lot simpler back in the day, but it's becoming ridiculous.

Just curious, is it unsportsmanlike for a team to run a fake punt or fumbleruski or any deception?

Lots of football plays are designed to deceive the defense. Is a QB doing a pump fake "too deceptive" because a DB bites and gets burned deep?

This! Half of Texags sounds like it's ready to count on refs to figure out intent when someone is running down the field. Sliding is for QB's who want to pick up yards like a RB but not get hit like one. It's fine for a QB to run the ball, but just be prepared to get hit like every other player would.

I agree it's not an unsportsmanlike penalty, but I also have no problem with the play being blown dead once the QB shows an intent to slide.

Neither of those are tricking the defender into thinking the play is dead, at which point they are doing the qb a favor by not lighting him up.

Maybe it should be ok for a team to blow whistles from the sideline?

No. Has to be unsportsmanlike penalty and dead ball. But the dumb refs need to stop swallowing their whistles, too.

Quarterbacks are football players. They are 6'4" 225. They should be hit accordingly.
