My goodness. What a poser.

When we moved to Hawaii over 20 years ago and I was working with the local population, I sounded like "one haole" (white mainlander) and I acted like "one haole" for the entire 15 years we lived there. You'd think I wouldn't fit in. I also look like I'm in the military (being haole and having a short hair cut is all it takes) and there is some friction there with locals.

But, that was me and I never tried to be someone I'm not and locals respected me for it (although as time went by I was subconsciously saying things like dakine, small kine, no can, and putting yeah at the end of every sentence, all elements of Hawaiian pidgin)

Genuineness, humility, respect that's what was important.
