We've got to hold onto him for at least 2 more years!
Due for a huge raise/extension before it's too late.
Why hasn't this happened?? It will be crippling to lose him.
His recruiting power, play-calling, ability to adjust, etc

His stock has definitely been steadily rising.

Does anyone know if he has ambitions to be a HC?

I dont know if that is something that he has expressed publicly but everything I read about him here said he would be looking to take that next step into head coaching soon.

Elko will be off to a head coaching gig soon, but I don't think it happens this off-season. He seems to be waiting for a pretty big time opportunity, and I don't think he's going to settle.

This is probably the best year to leave for a HC job if you're a top candidate. In fact, this is unprecedented with how many top tier HC jobs are open, or about to be open. The following top jobs are open: LSU, USC, TCU, Va Tech. The following jobs will likely be open soon: UF, Miami, Baylor, SMU.

If Elko wants to be a HC, then he will leave after this year. Strike while the iron is hot.

The other SEC schools would be smart to subsidize Elko's salary at one of the colleges with open HC spots. Anything to get him out of College Station.

Is there any $$$ amount that would make him stay?
A&M should be doing everything they can to keep him

Probably Florida too. If not this year, then next.

His son graduates from high school this spring and is going to Northwestern. My guess is if there is a major HC job in the northeast that wants him, he will probably take it. Doubt he goes out west for one.

That's not a bad gig if he were to get it. He'd be crazy to turn it down.

With all the NIL money being thrown around, surely an Ag exec could hook Elko up with seven crooked digits, right? $80 oil.

Crap I could totally see that with his history in the ACC and VTs history on defense. Watch out for Wake Forest too if VT poaches their coach.

I've heard this mentioned several times on various sports talk shows, as most think VT wants to go with a defense minded coach.

What's big time? USC, LSU and probably Florida are all going to be open this year and that is not even counting the pile of head coaching jobs that come open after people start moving around. If he doesn't leave this year then he may never leave.

90% of what you read here are going to be fatalistic comments. Don't put any stock in them--don't assume that just because you read it here means he is looking to leave.

Elko is already one of the top-paid assistants in the country at north of $2 million salary, but you can never pay enough to these coaches, right?

There's nothing else for Jimbo or A&M to di. His kid is graduating soon. He's paid how he deserves to be. He's going to ultimately take a HC job. It's up to him on timing/fit.

Thankful for his time here.

Look. The guy is great, and good D coordinators are almost impossible to find. But he's had a tough time scheming against spread offenses. Both the MS schools went up and down the field on us (granted our own offense didn't do much to help keep them off the field).

I wish him the best, and hope like he'll we don't have to play his teams every year going forward. But I also hope that whoever replaces him can prepare for the uptempo offenses that some of the younger HC are bringing to the SEC.

We gifted MSU 5 points (out of their 26) and Ole Miss 16 points (out of their 29).

Yes we all wish they would have blitzed and forced the issue more against MSU but those games were lost by the offense.

Hopefully he is like like Kirby Smart and sticks around for 8 years before taking a head coach job.

Our offense lost us those games.
Our defense is what gave us a shot.

Don't know of any realistic hires that would be an upgrade

Oof. I pick a D built for the majority of offenses in its league. I'm all for working through some kinks, but as others have said defense - is not the reason we lost those games. Build a team around stopping the pirate and you suddenly can't stop a power run.
