Yes, I believe the horse got tangled up on a camera cable or something down on the sideline and lost its footing and ran into a wall in one of the tunnels. I don't know that I would call that suicide though.

I remember this, it didn't happen that long ago. If memory serves me correctly that horse ran about a 100 yards full speed into a wall.

But if I were a horse that was used as a prop for that shty school I might do the same.

Definitely suicide.

Threw its rider and ran up the ramp, sliding into the wall head first.

Texas Tech should rethink its entire existence.

They would have the horse run in front of the west stands, then up the tunnel in the southwest corner. For some reason, on this occasion (may have been spooked), the horse was going too fast and didn't negotiate the turn, running into the tunnel wall instead.

In that same article:

"Hey, that's not my baton: University of Texas band director Glenn Richter was arrested Friday and charged with carrying a gun at Robert Mueller Municipal Airport in Austin while trying to catch a flight to Pittsburgh for the Longhorns' game against Pitt. Richter, who said he didn't know the gun was in the bag, was released on a personal recognizance bond."

Different times for the tu band for sure.

The only other one I remember was back in the 70s when some sips stole the horse and painted it orange.

It happened in 1994-ish as well.

Yes. 1994 is correct, that article is wrong, unless it was another time. I know there was one that was hit by a car while in its trailer that had to be put down.

Happened in both '94 and '05, if my memory serves.

How bad does your team have to suck for the mascot to kill itself.

A funny story about the masked rider.
I was in Lubbock for the tt game (sometime in 90's). They a special moment on the 50 hardline midfield, honoring Norwest Bank (I think that was the name). They were recognized as the sponsor of the masked rider. About the time pa announcer said- and now a special presentation to our proud sponsor, the horse's tail rises into the air and it takes a humongous dump right there on the 50 yard line. Of course all of Aggies went berserk and laughed their behinds off.

A special presentation indeed!

The most recent tragedy relating to the Masked Rider tradition was the death of the mascot, Double T, during the Sept. 3, 1994 football game against New Mexicothe day Amy Smart debuted the new Masked Rider saddle. According to the Sept. 4, 1994, issue of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, "as Double T rounded the northwest corner of the stadium in a clockwise motion, the saddle appeared to slip to the left, and Smart (the Masked Rider), a Dallas junior, was thrown to the track. The riderless horse then bolted back toward the west sideline as fans, players and officials scurried toward the south end of the stadium, and turned into the southwest ramp when it slipped and struck its head on the cement wall."

Smart wasn't seriously injured, but the horse died instantly. Students, fans, and Masked Rider committee members were shocked and saddened by the event. No measures were taken to punish Smart. Lisa Gilbreath, Masked Rider the year prior to Smart, echoed the thoughts of many when she called the tragedy a freak accident and nothing more.

It looks like that article was published as an archive in 2005, but was originally published in 1994. It was definitely in the mid 90's because that was a sore spot for them back then.

Yes. My brother-in-law's Dad was an Aggie through and through; but his granddaughter was going to Tech, so he donated a replacement horse to Tech.

Not for humor, but I would be interested to see video of this. From the article it sounds like a new saddle was in use for the first time and it broke. I know in '94 tv cameras weren't everywhere but maybe it was caught on game film and is jus buried somewhere. I do find it amusing the article writer felt the need to say the rider was not disciplined.

Yes pretty sure the 1994 incident was the only time.. I don't think it occurred in 2005.

But yeah horse got spooked and ran head first into a wall.

Maybe the horse slipped on a tortilla. If i had to smell Lubbock 365 days a year i might have the same fate.

A friend of mine from grad school (I went to A&M) went to tceh. His dad was the university vet for tceh. They have a ranch in Franklin, TX. When we would play tceh they used to keep the horse on the ranch. H would never let me go to the ranch when tceh was in town.

The incident in the late 70's where the horse was painted orange occurred in Brady. The Tech Red Raider was from Brady and stopped in Brady on his way to Austin. It was painted orange and they had to borrow a horse to use as a replacement for the game. Luckily the Red Raiders Dad was our local vet and the horse survived.

I believe the game was on tv if I recall. I remember seeing it happen.
We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Germans that we've got more guts than they have, or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-b******, were going to rip out their living G*******d guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun c********** by the bushel-f****** basket. War is a bloody killing business. You've got to spill their blood or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shot them in the guts.

As many have stated, 1994 was the year. Not 2005. 2005 apparently was pulled out of the same colon I want to talk about in a proposed old Aggies forum: :/
