Recruiting and Depth
There's a lot of heat coming down on Jimbo Fisher right now for not having back up plans and having no depth in year 4. Jimbo has recruited at a high level in his first 4 years and is continuing to roll with the 22 class. However, it does take years to build depth at every position, and A&M is well on their way to establishing depth at every position. I broke down the depth chart to see where we have depth and lack depth in year 4 and some possibilities on why we're lacking depth.

QB: Overall this position lacks depth in 2021 but moving forward we will have depth. Questions about Eli Stowers being moved to TE, and if Calzada showed signs that he wasn't ready are questions that would be nice to get answers too one day. But overall, I thought Calzada would be a serviceable backup QB based on the Spring Game and everything Jimbo said about the young man. Unfortunately, the lights are too bright for him.
18 James Foster (4 Star No. 12 DT, Transfer Portal 2020); 19 Zach Calzada (3 Star No. 20 Pro, 3rd string in 2020, backup in 2021); 20 Haynes King (4 Star No. 5 DT, backup as true fish, starter in 2021); 21- Eli Stowers (4 Star No QB, moved to TE?) ; 22 Weigman (5 Star No 2 QB); 23 Eli Holstein (4 Star No 7 QB)

RB: Overall this position is probably one of the deepest on the team.
18- Jashaun Corbin (4 Star No 8 APB); 19- Isaiah Spiller (4 Star No 9 RB); 20 Devon Achane (4 Star No 4 APB) Darvon Hubbard (3 Star No 39 RB) Deondre Jackson (3 Star No 56 RB); 21 LJ Johnson (4 Star No 5 RB) Amari Daniels (4 Star No 16 RB); 22 Nothing yet (Recruting Moss 4 Star No 5 RB)

WR : Overall this position has been recruited well, but with the lack of rotation we lost Wright and Kam last year. The depth is there and building at this position, the young guys will only get better with more reps.
18 Jalen Preston (4 Star No 18) Caleb Chapman (4 Star No 60); 19 Dylan Wright (4 Star No 12 Transfer Portal 2020) Kam Brown (4 Star No 29 Transfer Portal 2020) Chase Lane (3 Star No 63) Annias Smith (3 Star No 48 ATH); 20 Demond Demas (5 star No 3) Moose Muhammad (4 Star No 28) Devin Price (3 Star No 89); 21 Shad Banks (4 Star No 18 Transfer Portal a week in?) Yulkieth Brown (4 Star No 15 ATH); 22 Noah Thomas (3 star No 54), Recruiting Brenen Thompson (4 Star No 11) and Chris Marshall (4 Star No 15)

TE: Position lacks depth after this season. Donovan Green or Baylor Cupp will need to step up into a production role.
18 Jace Sternberger (3 Star Transfer) Glenn Beal (3 Star No 26 in Transfer Portal); 19- Baylor Cupp (4 Star No 1) Jalen Wydermyer (4 Star No 15); 20 Blake Smith (3 Star No 24); 21 Dametrious Crownover (3 Star No 19) Fernando Garza (3 Star No 37); 22 Donovan Green (4 Star No 4)

OL: This position has suffered the worst from guys not panning out rather that be medical issues, suspensions, and transfer portal. The OL has been recruited well during the Jimbo era but took too many early hits with guys not panning out. Three 4 stars from the 18 class had medical problems or transferred due to playing time. Ultimately it is Jimbos problem as being in charge and should have maybe reached out to the portal more this year, but we have a serviceable group of 5 if they can stay healthy Gotta keep recruiting hard at this position and build it up.
18 Colten Blanton (4 Star No 13 OT Medical Retire) Tank Jenkins (4 Star No 11 OG Transfer Portal) Luke Matthews (4 Star No 17 OG Injury) Barton Clement (3 Star No 18 OG); 19 Kenyon Green (5 Star No 3 OT) Layden Robinson (3 Star No 5 OC) Blake Trainor (3 Star No 64 OT); 20 Chris Morris (4 Star No 5 OG Dismissed from program conduct) Aki Ogunbiyi (4 Star No 9 OG) Josh Bankhead (3 Star No 36 OG) Smart Chibuzo (3 Star No 37 OG) Jordan Jefforson (3 Star No 29 OC Idk about this cat, was committed for like 4 years); 21 Bryce Foster (4 Star No 5 IOL) Duece Fatheree (4 Star No 16 OT) Trey Zuhn (4 Star No 20 OT) Jordan Moko (3 Star from Australia) Remmington Strickland (3 Star No 28 IOL) Matthew Wykoff (3 Star No 37 OT); 22 PJ Williams (4 Star No 9 OT) Hunter Erb (4 Star No 24 OT), Recruiting Kam Dewberry (4 Star No 11 OT), Mark Nabou (3 Star No 31 IOL)

Defensive Backs (Throwing DB's and S together) : This position has been recruited very well and continuing to build depth. Injuries have hurt this unit this year, but moving forward looks like the depth is starting to build up.
18 Leon Oneal (4 Star No 8 S) Jordan Moore (4 Star No 19 S Transfer Portal); 19 Brian Williams (4 Star No 6 S) Demani Richardson (4 Star No 7 S) Erick Young (4 Star No 10 CB) Elijah Blades (4 Star Juco); 20 Jaylen Jones (5 Star No 1 S) Antonio Johnson (4 Star No 4 S) Brian George (4 Star Juco) Josh Moten (4 Star No 30 CB); 21 Deuce Harmon (4 Star No 15 CB) Jardin Gilbert (4 Star No 18 S) Dreyden Norwood (4 Star No 24 CB) Tyreek Chappell (3 Star No 49 CB); 22 Bryce Anderson (4 Star No 5 S) Smoke Bouie (4 Star No 2 ATH) Bobby Taylor (4 Star No 17 CB) Jarred Kerr (4 Star No 18 S), Recruiting Jacoby Matthews (4 Star No 2 S)

Linebackers: Still developing depth at this position, but this is also a tough position to stack up depth considering only 2 LB's play and there's not much rotation. Perkins is a must get.
18 No linebackers; 19 Andre White Jr (4 Star No 18 ILB) Ke'Shun Brown (4 Star No 22 ILB Transfer) Tarian Lee Jr (3 Star No 51 OLB) Chris Russel (3 Star No 39 ILB) RJ Orebo (3 Star No 82 OLB); 20 Antonio Doyle (4 Star No 5 ILB) Edgerrin Cooper (4 Star No 11 OLB) Kenneth Phillips (3 Star No 74 OLB); 21 No linebackers; 22 Ish Harris (4 Star No 38 LB) Martell Harris (3 Star No 40 LB), Recruiting Harold Perkins (5 Star No 1 LB).

Defensive Line: Similar to the Running Back group this position is in a great place moving forward and depth is there.
18- Bobby Brown (4 Star No 17 DT) Max Wright (4 Star No 8 SDE changed to TE) Jeremiah Martin (4 Star No 15 WDE Transfer to Wash) Tyree Wilson (3 Star No 23 WDE Transfer to Tech); 19 Demrvin Leal (5 Star No 2 DT) Braedon Mowry (4 Star No 14 WDE) Derrick Hunter (4 Star No 21 SDE) Adarious Jones (3 Star No 35 DT); 20 Donnell Harris (4 Star No 5 WDE) McKinnley Jackson (4 Star No 9 DT) Fadil Diggs (4 Star No 9 WDE) Isaiah Raikes (3 Star No 41 DT) Dallas Walker (3 Star No 46 DT); 21 Shermar Turner (5 Star No 6 DL) Tummise Adeleye (4 Star No 9 DL) Marcus Burris (4 Star No 21 DL) Elijah Jeudy (4 Star No 14 EDGE) Jahzion Harris (4 Star No 15 EDGE) Albert Regis (3 Star No 57 DL); 22 Malick Sylla (4 Star No 6 EDGE) Jadon Scarlett (3 Star No 56 DL), Recruiting Walter Nolan (5 Star No 1 DL) Shemar Stewart (5 Star No 3 DL) Gaberial Dindy (5 Star No 4 DL) Bear Alexander (5 Star No 6 DL) Enai White (4 Star No 3 EDGE) Anthoney Lucas (4 Star No 9 DL)

*All ranking taken from 247, guys like Sylla, Foster, Anderson, LJ were all 5 stars on rivals*

I tried this last week and it got zero traction.

Blue star for you for going out doing your research. When you look at the OL numbers, this year all make sense and ZERO of it is Jimbo's fault. But you won't get the blue stars you deserve.

Nice work, but if you are going to pull all of your data from 247 anyways, you do know they already have the talent composite that does that work for you now, right?

"The OL has been recruited well during the Jimbo era but took too many early hits with guys not panning out."

"Guys not panning out" is the definition of NOT recruiting well.

Can't predict injuries and suspensions to four 4 stars….

Quarterback depth is something that only the lucky and maybe the top 5 can expect going forward.

We got very unlucky/ the bagman failed on the OL. Dan Moore leaving made sense. Carson Green leaving was a judgment call. Hocker was not getting drafted or was going outside the big money. Same with McCollum.

The royal "we" should have paid some of them to stay. With a healthy McCollum and Hocker, we are probably 5-0 and still ranked in the top 10.

First, holy crap OP. Get a job, hobby or girlfriend.

Second, we have been sniffing our own farts, just like we have been pointing and laughing at the t sips for doing. These guys aren't that great. Our awesome dominant D line has been anything but. We can't get any heat on the qb with just 4. There is no edge rusher, but we keep telling ourselves that these guys are the best out there. Enough telling. Time to start showing. Same story with the wide receivers and the tight end.
The running backs and a couple of the db's are the only ones living up to hype.

Brenen Thompson just committed to sips. 3-3 records don't help recruiting. Sucks.

We'll close plenty of great talents. Now, it won't be as good as it would have been had we gone 11-2 or 12-1 this year. But a top 10 class despite being (my current guess) 8-5.

Looking at the OL roster, the thing that really sticks out to me the dearth of upperclassmen. 2 grad student/super seniors (neither of whom are starters) and 2 juniors - Green and Matthews, and one of those has not and will not play this season due to injury. No seniors at all. A whole mess of sophomores and freshman, three of whom are starting.

What happened with recruiting OLs 3 years ago?

Injuries and discipline issues are sometimes predictable, sometimes not. If a player got injured frequently in HS, or got in trouble a lot in HS, that probably won't change.

But sometimes s*** just happens, and sometimes kids get nuts when they're out on their own for the first time.

Seems like the OL recruiting turned out alright. Wanted to bump OP so he can be given respect for this post and effort while others were thinking the sky was falling.

Wtf?? Is this a joke?? Projected 4 1st rounders this coming draft. Who says the backup OL aren't any good? They're playing behind some studs.

First off what heat? From whom? Second, Zach Calzada was the backup plan. What team has a 3rd stringer that's sitting there that is actually game ready? I will tell you, no one does.

Context of the OP matters, check the time stamp.

The OP made this post after MSST, I believe.
