Every junior high coach tells his players to pick up the ball and hand it to the ref on a downed punt.

Regardless if they should have called a penalty for 2 players with the same number, if they should have blown it dead (and indeed reviewed it) because the player was touching the ball with his knee down, if the ref who signaled the play dead didn't blow the whistle.....

Regardless of any of that.....

...the refs screwed up, seemingly MULTIPLE times on one single play.

SEC refs...ugh

I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'

I don't think the Memphis TD was messed up. The Memphis player had the ball before the signal, and by rule it was still live. MSU should have played more disciplined ball.

Saw this on another board. Defensive player's knee is down and hand on the ball.
Check the full video. His hand grazes the ball as it goes past him. No control. Not a dead ball.

Without the refs, Ohio State would have lost to Minnesota in the season opener. OSU, tu, and Bama have no business complaining about officiating.

But yeah, those were bad calls.

They'd have lost to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl too. Oh well.

For reference, tOSU beat Miami for the MNC in 2002 thanks in large part to a very questionable penalty late in the game. I can't remember the exact situation but I think it was a PI call down by or in the end zone that either was or wasn't called that allowed tOSU to win.

Edit: I googled it. It was 4th down in OT with Miami up 24-17. Miami gets a very weak PI called on them in the end zone. Flag was late coming out.
And guess who the referee was? None other than our buddy Randy Kristal. Lol
