No. Parents paid for plane tickets from California. Friends helped me get to and from school and store stuff over summer break especially.

All made possible by generous tuition and fees by state of Texas, generous scholarships by hole community in San Bernardino and the GREAT work of the Texas A&M Foundation and the Financial Aid Department. Generosity of my scholarship sponsors the Frank L. Thompsons, and of the federal tax payers who supported my then BEOG and now Pell Grants.

But my friends and I trucked my two suitcases and two carry on bags up and down the stairs at Shuhmacher to and from the fourth floor!!!

Me and my Dad moved my sister ('02) into her dorm way back in the Fall of '98. It wasn't a bad experience at all and Dad took us to the CS Red Lobster afterwards.

I'll be 81 years old in 9 days, but I remember September 8, 1958, the first day of New Student Week, quite well. I had a 1929 Chevrolet which I had bought for $50 off a used car lot in Garland my jumior year in HS, but it was not reliable enough to drive to CS so my Dad drove me down from Dallas that day. 63 years ago you could drive pretty much all over the entire campus and parking wasn't an issue. We drove to the MSC to check me in where I received my outfit assignment, "A" Armor, and Dorm 17 room key. Everything I brought from home was in a single foot locker which we carried into the dorm. The 1st Sgt., Mr. Ken Stufflebeme, sir from Brenham met us at the door, introduced himself, and took me to my "hole." My Dad shook hands with me, told me "Good luck," left and drove on back to Dallas.

The best thing about that first week was that the only upperclassmen present on our stoop of the dorm were Mr. Stufflebeme, sir and senior Mr. Herb Whalen, sir, the CO of "A" Troop Jocks. The following week when the despicable Class of '61 pissheads and other upperclassmen showed up was a different story altogether. But that's for another day.

Said goodbye in my driveway in my home town. Didn't see them until Thanksgiving.

And I loved my parents, but it was definitely a different time.

My parents never saw the campus until I graduated 4 1/2 years later. My Dad put me on an Air Force transport at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska to McCord AFB in Washington and I found my way to campus from there.

Nope. In 1991 my brother was a sophmore at TAMU, and mom and dad went on a cruise less than 24 hours after I was handed my Highschool diploma.

My big bro moved me into Crocker Hall in June of 1991 with a "grab your bags and good luck" sort of statement from the parking lot across the street from North Gate. As I piled out of his 1990 Maroon Chevy Blazer, I knew my life would immediately change.

30 years later, and I still remember that day as one of the best days of my life.

Nope. Drove myself in a truck which i lived in in someone's back yard until other arrangements were finalized. Moved into a northside dorm in Spring. All my moving i did myself- whatever i coukd fit in backseat of a toyota.

really just had a set of linens/pillow, toiletries, some clothes, boots, tennies, cleats (intramurals! ) church shoes, desk lamp, and one year a rug- that was my one big item.

First game we beat Memphis St 59-0 and poor Loupot's had to discount everything in their bookstore 59%! They put a cap on that policy after that!

Did it by myself.

My dad Class of '48 told my mom to say her goodbyes at the house.

I drove up, found the quad and someone said what outfit did I want to be in.

I told them I'm a runner and going to be on the cross country team.

They told me E-1 Jocks and the rest is history.

You just missed my dad as he finished in the spring of 58; he was in C Armor and lived in Dorm 17 (Crocker Hall); Those Armor jocks were mean and hated by the rest of the Corps back then!

I lived in the dorms for my first two years. My parents helped my freshman year because I didn't have a car.

Sophomore year I had a car ('87 VW Rabbit), so I moved myself.

The one thing that amazes me watching move in to the dorms every year is how much crap some of these students have. Furniture is provided in the dorms, what in the world do you need a U-Haul trailer for?

Especially since so much stuff now is so much smaller. A laptop in the early 90s was super expensive - I had a desktop PC with a tower and big fat CRT monitor. I actually indulged with a big, rack component stereo system, complete with Bose 201 speakers. Nowadays, that's your laptop and/or phone, and a bluetooth speaker. And I still fit everything in that VW Rabbit.

No. I reported for FOW all on my own.

I went with both my kids to drop them off for FOW, and cried with both.

ABATTBQ87,

Thanks very much for posting the Fall 1958 "A" Armor photos. Lots of memories associated with all those names. There was very high fish attrition back then. Of the fish listed, only 16 (including John Baird who is not listed) made it to Final Review the following Spring which was canceled due to rain. 14 of the 16 of us eventually graduated from A&M and 8 of those 14 are still living: John Baird, Charlie Berry, Dock Burke, Chuck Cochran, Jim Davis, Bill Dyer, Frank Hall and myself.

Our fellow"A" Jock fish Tom Ralph, one of my several roommates at A&M, was an Aggie's Aggie. He was the most gung ho Ag I've ever known,, bar none, as well as a Ross Volunteer and a junior and senior yell leader and war hero .

Marine company commander Captain Thomas H. Ralph of Clifton, Texas was killed in action in Vietnam on May 17, 1968 saving the life of one of his men for which he recieved a Bronze Star. See also:

My classmates remember Tom every year on the anniversary of his death.

Sorry, I missed knowing your dad by a few months. Many thanks again!

PS - Long before the the Parsons Mounted Cavalry existed, A&M had cavalry ROTC units. I understand the cavalry designation was changed to armor sometime in the late 40's or possibly later to be consistent with the U. S. Army which had discontinued the horse cavalry. However, tradition doesn't die easily at A&M and those of us in Armor units still proudly considered ourselves as cavalry. (Other Corp members called us the"dam jocks"). The jock reference of course was to horse jockeys and not athletes. When we could get away with it (there was bull ring punishment if caught) we would wear the crossed saber collar brass rather than the required brass with the tank and sabers. Ironically, the cavalry designation has been brought back in some regular Army units. Unfortunately, at A&M the Army branch units were disbanded beginning with the Fall 1959 semester and Army ROTC companies subsequently designated as simply A-1, etc. Basically no different than the aircrappers!

Nope, drove myself up from Corpus Christi TX with all my gear in the back of my truck and best friend riding shotgun. Spring forward 30 years and just dropped off both my son (Freshman living in dorm) and daughter (sophomore transfer living in student apartment). Had no idea it was going to be as emotionally tough as it was. Glad they are there together though.

No, my parents didn't help me move, too many kids still at home.

I Rode from South Texas with a friend a week before classes started.

The first time my parents came to College Station was for my wedding during my first Senior Year.

I'm class of '69, my Dad was class of '32. My Mom and Dad drove me up to College Station in our 58 Pontiac on old highway 6 through Hempstead and Navasota. We stopped some where along the for coconut cream pie. My Dad did not get his degree because of the depression, even though he had enough hours to get his class ring. . Because of that me getting my degree meant the world to him. They helped me move in to old dorm 15. They didn' t she stay long, but I could tell how much it meant to Dad that I was going to A&M. With out a doubt that is one of my most treasured memories I have of my folks.

No. After I got accepted to Texas A&M as a transfer student in May 2013, my parents bought a condo across the street from the Tap in June 2013. In August 2013, I took a road trip with my brother from northern California to College Station. He helped me to load things into my parents' condo. Then 9 days after we arrived, I drove him to the Houston airport, and he he flew back to California.
