I wrote for the Batt for 3 of his 4 years. It was tough listening to RC praise the weekly 11 of 23 for 130 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception as another winning performance.

I don't think Slocum ever really trusted and let his OC do their job because when Toledo left to go to UCLA, his offense looked completely different than at A&M ... as a result, the 90's A&M teams were very one-dimensional and lost to many teams that had equal talent to them (i.e FSU, ND, etc).

I don't know where the root of the problem was but we didn't manage QBs worth a damn in that era. They played typically played too tight.

As I recall, RC took Peyton out to watch the team practice and Peyton watched Corey Pullig throwing these 8-yard laser beams within 5-6 feet of the intended receiver almost ever time and was like, "Screw this, I'll never start with this guy here."
I'm not sure I recall Pullig throwing "laser beams", you sure you're not talking about Jeff Granger? Granger was left handed, also a pitcher for you youngsters, who usually threw it hard and in to the dirt at the receivers feet. Great play against Tech though!

Corey Pullig was a winner for us and we were fortunate to have him in maroon and white.

I always thought Pullig had plenty of physical talent. And he came off the bench as a true freshman and showed some poise and ultimately became the starter. I just don't think we did much to help him develop over the next four years.

Steve Ensminger raised his Pullig's passing stats quite a bit. But we also had truly great running backs and the spread hadn't totally taken over Texas high schools and colleges yet. But Ensminger was brought in from George specifically to open up the passing game and accomplished some of those goals.

I don't know why some people still get down on Pullig. They should look up offensive stats for that era for programs we were competing against. Gaudy passing stats were not common.

Okay, his name is Arch(ie) Manning, I get that, but if his name was Leonard Pickens, would people still be high on him?

Trying to claim anyone in the Manning family needs to get paid is hilarious.

Rumor is the Mannings are fans of Lane Kifffin, Garrett Riley(Zac Thomas at AppSt and Buechele's SR year and yes he is Lincoln's brother), and Steve Sarkisian for QB development and offenses run with keeping an eye on OL talent and coaching. Seems pretty unlikely to me that Garrett Riley will still be at SMU 3 years from now.

If Manning is concerned about OL talent he won't be going to t.u.

His uncle Peyton didn't come here because RC showed him a media guide with Rodney Thomas, Greg Hill and Leeland on the cover. Stated that he knew that passing wasn't a priority here. He was on the verge of committing until he saw that.

Not exactly the way that happened. He did see a media guide on a coach's desk that had our running backs on the cover. Not my desk and I did not show it to him although I would have had no problem showing it to him. It was not a secret that we had good running backs. His dad and I were good friends and still are. I told Peyton that we would use his talents if he came here. Our media guide was not the reason. It does make a good story. Peyton is a great guy and still a good friend. The Manning family is Special.

Yeah, he coulda just wrote his 2 pass plays on an index card, given it to his ball boy, and said "pick one of these for me every 3rd down after we run up the middle and then try a sweep on 2nd down. " Woulda saved a lot on OC salary.

1) go route down the sideline requiring a perfect pass between defender and the sideline...

2) outroute run 3 yards short of the first down marker

I'll take "Things you'd never have the stones to say to his face" for $200, Alex.

We lost a grand total (bowl games included) of 6 games in the 4 years that made up my fish through zip years.
The level of disrespect the man gets for absolutely SPOILING A&M fans for a 10 year period is sickening.

Surprised no one has mentioned Brandon Stewart's ties to this story. Competed with Peyton as a freshman at Tennessee. I recall his stats being right there equal with Peyton's their freshman year. Brandon saw the writing on the wall though and then transferred to Aggie Land where he sat out a season due to the transfer rules.

I recall Slocum opening things up in Stewart's first couple of games. But, after a disastrous second game in young Stewart's career, Slocum shelved that "crazy" West coast offense, and went back to ground and pound. The next time we got to see Brandon Stewart's true talent was 3 years later, late in the 4th quarter against K State. When Slocum, finally decided to open it up...mainly because it was his only option at that point. I know he only pulled the lid off begrudgingly, because he waited tell it was almost too late.

I often wonder what would have happened if Stewart would have transferred to a team and coach willing to build an offense around his talents. I think it would have been similar to when Aikman gave up on Switzer, his running offense, and transferred out to UCLA.

A lot of people don't remember accurately RC and his horrible offenses. RC didn't get the support he needed from the Administration at the time, but his unwillingness to do what Saban has done the last few years, was by far his biggest mistake.

Oh what could have been.
Ag81Golf

It was not the "west coast" offense. Coach Slocum on a mobile always called it the "Gulf Coast" offense.

Put some respect on that man:

Overall College Career

Pullig never relinquished the starting job, setting a school record with 40 consecutive starts. While quarterback, Texas A&M had, at the time, the longest active home game winning streak in the NCAA.

Pullig finished his career with a 33-6-1 mark as a starter, the most wins for any quarterback in Texas A&M history. He also passed for a school record 6,888 yards (broken by Reggie McNeal in 2005). Texas A&M posted ten or eleven wins per season while Pullig was quarterback.

Texas A&M won the Southwest Conference championships in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, Texas A&M ranked first in the Southwest Conference but was unable to qualify for the Southwest Conference championship due to being on probation from the NCAA (sips meddling).
