Looking at Lectric Leland highlights, just nice to see someone return a kick in the college game. When was the last time you got excited about the ball being kicked to one of our guys?

Achane's career is off to a great start...and he already has an all-time run (Orange Bowl vs. UNC) on his career resume...but he has a long way to go to catch Leeland.

McElroy finished with 29 rushing TD's, 7 receiving TD's, and 4 kickoff return TD's in 32 career games.

that's 40 career touchdowns...and many of them were of the long-distance variety

one of his greatest games (not mentioned yet) was the 1995 opener vs. LSU at Kyle.

it was 101 degrees at kickoff...and much hotter down on the astroturf.

Leeland carried the ball 35 times for 229 yards & 3 TD's...runs of 18 yards, 3 yards, and 33 yards to paydirt.

he also caught 5 passes for 49 yards...and returned 3 kickoffs.

when 100% healthy...he was a superstar

by the way...that LSU team finished 7-4-1.

they were pretty good that season with Kevin Faulk and Eddie Kennison

Achane is VERY different from LM. In all seriousness, he's probably the best back I' e ever seen as a freshman when you count ALL the variables like speed power quickness vision balance ball security maturity sticking to the hole etc... just amazes me.

Leland's injury in the '95 Colorado game was huge and affected A&M for the rest of the season in which they were preseason #1 in one of the polls. Let's all hope Achane doesn't have the same fate.

Koy Detmer's Injury had a greater affect if memory serves .

This
Leeland hurt his ankle in the 1995 loss @ Colorado early in the season.
He reinjured in the loss to Texas and missed the Alamo Bowl win over Michigan

I've been watching a lot of the 1994 and 1995 games and watching Leland McElroy just reminds me of Devon Achane. Leland didn't look super fast in traffic, but got yards and if he got outside he was GONE. Achane just runs like him in space and in traffic.
Achane is a more powerful and tougher individual. McElroy was fast a a cat, however, he didn't have the build that Achasne has. McElroy didn't last in the pros because of the lack of toughness.

Leland was almost 30 pounds heavier than Achane is.

Wev'e had some excellent combo backfields. Rodney Thomas/ Greg Hill probably being the best in my memory . I think Achane- Spiller could turn out to be the best of the lot.

McElroy never really lived up to his potential imo . You could see the ability was there but it never totally clicked for whatever reason. I don't recall him having any severe injuries.

I don't recall LM having injuries. I do recall Steve Ensminger/OC trying to use LM - a fleet footed back as a Detron Smith or Robert Wilson up-the-middle bruiser. The O-scheme and the personnel didn't match. When Colorado puts 9 & 10 in the box and someone thinks LM is going to be successful in that environment and never change the play calling, it's not LM's fault.

This

I remember being so frustrated during that cu game watching Leland get stuffed time and time again while we refused to open up the offense, and then when we did have an opportunity in the passing game, our WR (Aaron Oliver?) drops a wide open slant that would have gone to the house and completely changed the complexion of that game

Torn ACL in the first quarter only for their backup QB to come in and lead them to victory. That was a top 5 Buffs team, though, from when the Big 8 was legit.

The combo of Achane's ability to break tackles as a speed back has been the most impressive thing so far. He's broken several TDs off by shrugging off tackles at the 3rd level. He's a great reload back in the second half when opposing defenses are worn down. It will be interesting to see how he does as a RB1 eventually.

He broke one tackle in the bowl game. That was pretty much it. Not saying he won't do more, but Anias Smith broke more tackles in that game than Achane broke in his career.

Look, the kid will be great, if he keeps his head screwed on and doesn't have injuries. But let's just chill and watch the football a bit before we anoint him for some lofty height he hasn't earned yet.

I find Achane has better wiggle or lateral quickness than LM. Thoughts?

I had a buddy that worked out with LM and said he was a freak of nature in the weight room and on the field. He had squat and bench press numbers that only the linemen were barely able to touch. Not to mention he ran like a 4.3. I'm pretty sure LM was on his way to being a NFL regular before his injuries. Love to watch DA too.
