Was looking up old football championships to see if any of them had won fewer games than ohio st this year and ended up looking at A&M's 1939 team (we won more than 7 games). Does anyone know what these positions are? C, Q, and F are fairly obvious, but I don't think I've seen an "REL" before.

Sterling, James 67 REL
Boyd, Joe 64 RTL
Henke, Charles 38 RGL
Vaughn, Tommie 60 C
Robnett, Marshal Foch "Foxey" 43 LGR
Pannell, Ernest 54 LTR
Smith, Herbert 29 LER
Moser, Derace "Mose" 42 LHR
Thomason, James 47 RHL
Price, Walemon 45 Q
Kimbrough, John "Jarrin" 39 F

"End" maybe?

I have some old football cards that I recall list Right End and Left End...

The middle letter tells you what they played. Tackle, end, guard, halfback. For f and q those are fullback and qb.

I'm uncertain about R and L but many teams back then didn't have a right side and left side but a strong and weak side similar to defenses. The R and L may have told you where they lined up depending on which side was the strong side.

I think it was the other way. Strong and weak side defenders (other than safeties) have only been around the last 20-30 years.

They just lined up left and right. made a strength call on defense, which told the front how to line up and also often indicated who was the contain. But the LDT was on the left and vice versa.

Any chance some of those were positions for playing BOTH WAYS?

Every time I see this name, I am reminded of the TV commercials in Houston for Tommie Vaughn Ford.

I looked in the 1940 Longhorn hoping for a roster w/ positions spelled out.

All I learned is that HB was also a defensive position.

Back in the day most teams had one platoon, meaning everyone played both ways.

Yep
Re - right end
Rt - right tackle
Rg - right guard
Le - left end
Etc
Rh - right halfback
Lh - left Halfback
F - fullback
Most teams lined up offensively in a T formation. Then shifted into what was called a Notre Dame box formation. The Q actually was a blocking back in those days. Our high school ran this formation in late 40's and early 60's. Not sure about the other l & r.

With so few players, unlike today when you have 391 on the team, perhaps the R and L show their primary and secondary side. For example, Sterling was a right end primarily, or filled in at left end. Smith, was a left end primarily, filled in at left end. For most of the positions (E, T, G, and H) they have someone listed as R, the position, and L as well as someone listed as L, the position, then R.

But I could be wrong!

First thing I noticed after moving from the Panhandle to BCS was the oppressive heat and humidity. The second thing was that there was no such thing as cold water running out of the showerhead. The choices were "warm" and "hot".

Right end, left tackle, right halfback and left halfback, etc. But I don't understand REL--right end L?

I thought Sterling was a TE? He's on the right end on both sides of the ball.
