It'll be an easy addition that players must play the entire season including bowl games to earn that paycheck.

They're inevitably getting paid. Just put that in the contract. If they opt out, they forfeit the money they'd earn during the season

Stop using the term "opt out". They quit playing for their team and should pay at the next level but that level is lost to kneeling.

Some already get paid. Its called a scholarship. There is no need to pay players. Are schools going to pay players in every other sport? The chess club? Ridiculous.

How do you feel about tech companies giving full time
Jobs to interns without requiring them to finish their degree?

Depends are those tech interns on full rides or paying their own way through college?

If the chess club brings in millions of dollars every year, then absolutely they should get paid.

I mean- I guess it's probably a little of both.

Donors fund scholarships for those who pursue an education. Employers write paychecks to employees.

Companies/businesses hire college interns and pay a salary because it is a business model to find and hire the best staff possible. It is not a charity funded by "donors".

I'm not really following you but...

All I meant was- it feels comparable. Some tech company offers a college junior 6 figures vs a college junior given a high draft grade...

Oldyella wanted to hold the nfl accountable- do you hold the tech company accountable?

What paycheck?

The new rule just lets them make money on their name, image, and likeness, which will only result in cash for the Trevor Lawrences and DeVonta Smiths of the college football world.

It's still against the rules for them to receive any money from the schools...

Let's not kid ourselves. The vast majority of the young men who play college football these days have absolutely no desire or ambition to complete a college degree which they will enter industry or business as most real college students have.
Pay them. They are simply entertainment and have been for a number of years now. As evidenced by Mond, and those walking out on the field with him they have no ties or allegiance to the university or its traditions. The sooner we acknowledge this the easier it will be for all involved. If any paid entertainers wish to pursue a degree from the university, by all means apply and do the work and pay your way as most of us did.

My opinion is college sports is not a "business" as long as it substantially relies on donations from donors.

The chess club needs a half billion dollar facility to play in, with plush locker rooms, a practice facility, and a DJ and with all that we might recruit better chess players.

As long as college athletics stays on the path of hired mercenary versus a true student athlete, there will be less and less benefit for the alumni and fans and more for the individual players that are capable of playing at the next level. For many of them college is just a hold over until they get to where they actually want to be.

I doubt most of them feel any type of allegiance to a particular university (which admittedly works both ways). I'd say in a number of cases its simply a business decision.

Many of them these days don't even adopt the rivalry passion against historical rivals. They like their posts on social media and shout them out. Which I suppose is understandable considering they grew up playing with these guys and attended various camps with them, and have a real relationship whereas the university is just a brand they're temporarily attached to..

If players don't finish the season and quit for some games then they effectively quit and break their scholarship contract in my view. They can't act like independent contractors and play only games they choose, it's not set up on a game by game basis for players to pick and choose.

If a player opts out, they should need to reimburse university for the value of a one year scholarship at a minimum. I'd set it at 3x the value of the scholarship at the time they opt out. Their wages should be garnished back to the university.

Bowl wins impact coaching records, stats, recruiting, and the brand. Players opting out are hurting the universities who give them the scholarship and coaching and exposure that got them on the radar of scouts.

Great point. Now why aren't the coaches just playing for the life of the sport like the amateurs they teach??

I've always liked the idea of scholarships but that's not what these young folks want anymore. You might as well offer them free pizza and 20% off on their calc 3 textbooks. They may like the idea of a scholarship, perhaps even the though of walking across the stage and someone handing them a sheet of paper with their name on it, but it's pretty much a waste of money in their minds as evidenced by the graduation rate of athletes.

Because the coaches aren't students. If you pay football players you better be prepared to pay the volleyball team equally or face lawsuits

Dumb point is dumb

As far as coaching goes, there's still too much money left to milk out of tv contracts. When college sports draw the same audience numbers as your sophomore history professor, that's when coaches will earn the same money. Bottom line, whatever is wrong with college football is our (the fans) fault for letting it get out of hand.
