Honestly it felt like Auburn never liked Gus. They were always threatening to fire him.

The fans? Yes, but the admin kept giving him extensions every time he flirted with Arkie

Their coaches this century - Tuberville, Chizik, and Malzahn - all pretty much ended with the same storyline.

It's just what Aubrun do...
And can you believe that one of them became a US Senator??? Maybe CheeseStick and Gus will become ambassadors or something.

I live in east Alabama. His opponent in the election, Doug Jones, ran a negative ad with footage of Tuberville's "Pine box" speech in it. Tuberville won anyway. Seems they're not too upset about it.

I was born and raised a Bama fan, so understand Auburn well. It is one thing to be in the SEC West and have to compete with Bama, it is another thing entirely to be in the same state and have to do so. However, I think this is very short sighted of Auburn. There are two living active coaches that have beaten Saban more than once, and Gus is one of them. 2019 was a strong season for Auburn, esp. with a freshman QB, they came very close to winning at LSU.

As an Aggie fan I hate to say "manage expectations" as that can translate to accepting mediocrity, but it is also being realistic. It does NOT mean accepting mediocrity, and I wouldn't call what Auburn has done under Gus to be mediocre.

When Auburn is good, they are extremely good, Top 10, and can play for the SEC and NC with a few lucky breaks. When they are bad, they still go to a bowl game. The is pretty damned good IMHO.

Think this was a mistake by Auburn, but they have always had a group of high-powered meddling booster (see Tubberville - Petrino). CFB, the SEC, even Alabama historically, has never seen anything like Saban at Bama. He won't live forever, and anyway although that is lead dog right now, I don't think you can set the bar to be competing with them at their level and consistency right now. Auburn has beaten Bama 2 of the last 4 games. Then again, Tommy T. beat Bama six times in a row, had an undefeated season in which they should have won the NC, and they were always actively trying to replace him as well.

Auburn BMAs make Aggie BMAs look like pre-schoolers.... and not in a good way.

Would be a good choice. Culture problem no problem ... see Pearl. AB brought back beller & Auburn has more to begin with.

Now Gus can go coach in the Big 12 with his mickey mouse bull**** trick play offense. He'll be the best thing since sliced bread over there.

If I were the horns I would replace kissy face Herman with Gus in a heartbeat.

Agree. He could do very well in Austin. Not quite the politician that sip typically looks for but he would be a solid choice

To his credit...Gus was in a BCS championship game and only lost by three...then again he helped Chizik win one...

I agree but sip's ego would never let them hire a coach who had just been fired.

Auburn made a mistake. They appear to me to be very, very impatient. If too much patience is our Achilles heel then I'd say not enough patience is theirs. Nothing wrong with high expectations. Unrealistic expectations generally yield poor results.

I don't think patience is their problem, there has been talk about him getting fired for a few years and he has been there since 2013...unrealistic expectations is their problem

I hear you but the unrealistic expectations lead to impatience. I struggle with who Auburn will hire that will consistently do better than Gus has done. He's been in the hunt for the SEC championship every 2-3 yrs. He beat Bama last yr. That's pretty good. He lost 25 seniors off last yrs team and it showed this yr. They were likely going to be pretty good again next yr. They were definitely below par this yr for Auburn.

Tech should hire Gus. He'd probably do well there.

Mentioning Texas, this year is a decent year for Auburn to do a coach search because they will probably be best available. Barring a turnaround (under a new QB, mind you), odds are that at least the tu job is open next year.

I'm not saying they should have done it, but it's a good year to do it for them. I think they think of him the way we thought of Sumlin, FWIW, where he gets blamed for everything bad and everything good gets attributed to something else (although Sumlin has done a great job validating our decision in his post-A&M career so far lol). The big difference is I don't think there is a Jimbo on the market this year.

I think Malzahn to Auburn fans was kind of like the equivalent of Mond to A&M fans.

He could have the great game plan and beat Bama but then have the WTF game like against SCar this year.
And also, for being known as an offensive genius, he would experience some really pitiful offensive performances against less than stellar defenses.

Had they not laid an egg against SCar, they would've been 7-3 this year with all three losses to Top 10 teams.
But had the refs not helped them against Arky and Ole Miss, they could have also been 4-6.

I can see where their frustration is coming from.

Gus was recruiting top 10-15 every year until this one. Why did it fall apart this year?
Emilio Fantastico

I think a lot of it was related to the grumbling of Gus getting canned. They had several highly ranked commits decommit over the course of the season.
Gus also had some big misses on guys they thought they were getting that committed elsewhere in recent weeks.

Let's hope Auburn doesn't go for this guy.

Maybe. But doesn't he have some legal hearing tomorrow that might air some really dirty laundry? He might be trying to go out in front of that...

I think this means Liberty or Tech is opening up more likely, which could mean Freeze to Auburn or Tennessee. As unrealistic as it is for them to fire Pruitt, Tennessee has got to be thinking of making a move, right? I mean when one of the hottest coaches on the market wants to come to your school and you've underachieved this long it just makes sense.

I think Bama and Saban is the problem, it has the big money money people unglued. Can you imagine how unhinged we'd be if Saban had his run at texas? A rival having a 2 decade dynasty of historic proportions? I think the last decade and half has given them a hair trigger regarding hirings/firings.

Understandable, but this is Lowder settling a personal score. Calmer heads prevail at most places.

2003-2009 was pretty rough and we didn't even have a MNC and then another appearance in the title game like auburn got to have in the last 10 years.

This is quickly becoming like a Tennessee Greg Schiano situation down at Auburn.

Big $$$ wants Kevin Steele and the fans are in outright revolt with a #stopsteele campaign.
