After the loss to Alabama I told myself "The only way we can possible make the playoffs is if we pull off a win against Florida." Guess what, we did just that. Now, if we can somehow win out the rest of this season. We can be looking at sitting second at 9-1 in the West. Hopefully Saban gets Alabama back on track because we need them to win out as well so they can go play Georgia in the SEC championship. I'm predicting that Alabama beats Georgia this next week and hopefully after that loss, Georgia wins out and is able to play Alabama in the SEC championship and lose to get there second loss. At this point we already know how it goes in the playoff selection. You have Alabama along with the the two other teams who play cupcakes in their conference in Ohio State and Clemson. With the Big 12 being how it is right now, there's no way a school from there conference gets in. If we look at the PAC-12, Oregon may win out after playing a weak schedule and take the fourth spot. The only thing that can stop us from getting to 9-1 is ourselves. This A&M team needs to step up and play every single game like they did against Florida. If we do win out, we have an awesome chance of taking the fourth spot in the playoffs.

I've said it here before, but if our chances of making the playoffs if we go 9-1 are WAY higher than the chances of us actually going 9-1.

The big 12 is eliminated with the exception of OK state and the Pac 12 isn't getting in, meaning the door is open to a one loss team who doesn't win their conference from the SEC or ACC and probably even the Big 10, as long as the one loss isn't in the conference championship game.

Run the table, and we're in. But to do that, we still have to play our best football against Auburn and Tennessee, and not overlook Ole Miss, MSU, Arky, LSU, and SCAR. If we curb our fumbling issues, find a way to tighten up the secondary (not even to the point of being great, they just have to be decent), and play our best every week, we can do it.

Imo we don't want to be in the playoff this year because we would get wrecked. I'd rather see us win a NY6 bowl.

From the looks of it the loser of a conference championship would also not make the playoff. They've been treating it as a quarterfinal of sorts. So assuming another one loss team from the SEC/ACC/B1G or OkieSt doesn't take it we'd be in great position especially since Bama will be a distant memory by then.

You totally want that playoff appearance no matter what may happen in the games.

And I don't think we'd get wrecked. If we did manage to go 9-1 that would mean we corrected our major issues and we have an outstanding team.

This is equivalent to the "I'd rather win the NIT than play in the NCAA tournament" argument.

Not really. When was the last time we made a NY6 bowl? And I feel that way because we've already proven we don't deserve a playoff berth.

It isn't hard to make the NIT. It isn't easy to make a NY6.

This is exactly it. This is why I expect the Big 12 to not be in. I don't think OK state can avoid 2 losses AND a late season loss or a loss in the championship game. So, that leaves us with 3 conferences.

The big 10 can't get 2 teams in with only an 8 game schedule IMO because the best case for a 2 loss team would be 7-1 Penn state behind 9-0 Ohio State. A 9-1 SEC or ACC school is in before a 7-1 big 10, and the big 10 champion MIGHT not even get in at 8-1 (say ohio state loses to penn st but wins the conference).

The 2nd place team from the ACC has to lose the championship game and is disqualified, and I see it being a hard argument that the 3rd place ACC team deserves to be in, unless it were like 9-1 ND but for them to be 9-1 and in 3rd involves a super weird triangle where they beat clemson and 9-1 miami beats ND and ND gets left out of the championship due to tiebreakers, THEN, sure bring me ND in the playoff since they're the only ones to have beat the ACC champion.

that math gif really is setting in now.

In short, I like the SEC's chances to get two teams in, and whoever the 2nd team is, will likely NOT be playing in the SEC championship game. I don't think we make the playoff, but might as well speculate while we aren't eliminated, amirite?

Clemson, UNC, & ND are ahead of us now, not sure how they are doing their divisions this year. tOSU & PSU are ahead of us as is Okie St.

Need lot of movement to get up there, as well as keep winning.

there are no divisions over there, on the east coast, iirc. so it's pretty much a guarantee that the 3rd best of those teams gets knocked down in the next 8 weeks and that the 2nd best gets knocked out of contention in the conf championship

Tap the brakes their fella!

Without a defense, this team is mediocre at best. Multiple pass happy team's on the schedule, the offense will have to play top notch the rest of the way through.

Even IIIIIF we win 7 straight, a lot of things must break right to get in. We lack credibility and the committee will look for a reason to exclude us.

But seriously, we tackle poorly. We don't rush the passer. Not one of our dbs can consistently lock a wr down in man coverage. Unless we get something figured out on defense, we have no chance of 9-1.

The chances of A&M going as a second SEC team are not good at all, even if they win out. Really, the only path that would have a high (virtually certain) chance of success would be for A&M to win out while Alabama loses two (Georgia and Auburn or LSU?). If that were to happen, whichever team won the SEC championship game would be in the playoff.

What has ou done the last several years to deserve a playoff spot? Yet, there they were getting "wrecked" in the playoffs every year.
A&M at 9-1 this year would deserve it as much if not more than any of those ou teams.

it's a bad break for the SEC that Bama and Georgia are playing during the regular season.

UGA will have to either win Saturday or win the SEC title game to make the CFP

Sure they are...I mean, these type of threads were all over the place when Aggie jokes started DECADES ago, right??!!

It's a legitimate topic. Will running the table be easy? No, but certainly not impossible. IMO, the timeout after the unsportsmanlike penalty on the kickoff, when Jimbo called timeout was the turning point for this program under Jimbo. The entire demeanor of the team changed, especially on offense. The OL basically said they were running, and there wasn't a thing the defense could do about it.

I suppose you and many others would rather have more posts about how it was a fluke and we will lose many more games.

The Jimbo train is leaving the station, so either get on or get the hell off the tracks because it will mow you down!

Since the College Football Playoff era started in 2014, we have never made a NY6 bowl. Only at most four SEC teams can make a NY6 or CFP. I think we have a great shot of finishing 2nd in the SEC West and making an NY6 bowl.

2014: Alabama, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss
2015: Alabama, Ole Miss
2016: Alabama, Auburn
2017: Alabama, Georgia
2018: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU
2019: LSU, Georgia

Just win and everything will fall into place. If the teams performance in those wins is quantified against others' wins and the Ags have better wins, we'll deservedly get in. If not, we get a NY6 game. Either way, it is growth.
