I consider all cuss words to be offensive and in many cases they incite violence...can I have people arrested for using them?

Sure it is ok for someone in the government.

I remember as a child in school how we were constantly taught that everybody is equal, not to treat other differently because of sex or race. Basically the idea is to treat people as INDIVIDUALS. Sounded like a good idea and I bought into it, but then then I grew up!

The government and society doesn't want you to treat individuals based upon performance and based upon the particular individual. Hence government programs like affirmative action which specifically treats people not based upon them as an individual, but rather their race.

Words have different meanings in different contexts, like it or not. If you're hanging out with your friends and you start ragging on one, he might call you an ass-hole, and you probably won't be offended. However, if someone you don't know calls you an ass-hole, it might end up in a fight. Whine and moan about a double standard all you want, but it's just a fact of life.

Anyway, if the N-word is just a word, why would they have they used it? Everyone knows just how loaded that word is, and if they did, it was because of the hurtful intent behind it. You can't just explain that one away.

Pigeon's take on this issue seems to be a very typical or common conservative viewpoint, and that is fine. Nothing necessarily wrong with it. But whoever said when the shoe is on the other foot brought up a very good point. The shoe has not been on the other foot and I seriously doubt it will ever be, so there is no way that either side will ever be able to completely understand each other's perspective. That is a sad reality that we just have to deal with; however, the use of the word was uncalled for if they indeed said it. I ask any of you would you yell out racial slurs at people in front of you and not expect them to be upset. You may not understand the other side, but why would you incite something like that (if indeed they incited it)

SuperEducated,

Not only do you sound arrogant I am not even for a moment convinced you are very educated or even intelligent.

You simply cannot argue that blacks in the 1960's wanted to be treated equally. We agreed, as a nation, that discrimination against any person based on race was wrong and that all people should be treated equal. How is it that you can justify a double standard now? I have never asked to be treated better than a minority and have never personally violated a minorites civil rights. How is it that a minority has the right to verbally attack a person simply based on the fact he is white and have society look the other way??? Try as you may but there is not a reasonable answer.

See my post above. Did we as a Nation really agree to that?
I think you can argue that as a society, as a Nation, we do choose to look at race---we do it all the time.
I still say I don't support affirmative action because it is nothing more than government supported discrimination based upon nothing more than race. The driving factor, the only factor really, is race.

There is NOT a double standard. This hole thread is forgetting about one important variable. There is a simple explanation why A&M players made the news and the congresswoman barely got any ink. (drumrole)

In this great country, College Football is more important than Congress.
