I always liked I.M. Hipp with Nebraska. He was great in college. Frank Broyles would refer to him as "the guy with the colorful name".

The walk on in this context is a bit misleading. Almost all the guys on this list had multiple D1 offers but chose to walk on somewhere that didn't offer.

The context here suggests these guys were total unknowns which just isn't true. Heck - even Gillaspia had multiple D1 offers coming out of high school.

J.J. went to one of the directional Michigan schools but was not a happy camper. Then he walked on at his home state school. I remember hearing a story about Red Grange at Illinois. I think his buddies at the frat house encouraged him to walk on for the Illini. I understand he had 4 TDs and over 200 yards rushing in the 1st quarter against Michigan. That's started the legend of the Galloping Ghost.

The last time I can remember a big time school have players come on as true walk ons was the 12th Man kickoff squad. Except maybe Forest Gump at Alabama.

I think Gump was actually scouted at a HS game where he was running away from the kids in the truck chasing him.

UNT and Air Force. He made it clear before his senior year he was going to walk on at A&M and didn't get any more offers.

Wes Welker considered a walk-on? He didn't get signed on signing day, but got a scholarship after from Tech.
