Few coaches would have inherited this program from Kevin Sumlin and done just as well as Jimbo Fisher. In the past two seasons at UCLA, Chip Kelly has gone 7-17. He went 7-11 in Pac-12 games, but 0-4 against Group of 5 teams. He lost to Cincinnati twice, Fresno State, and San Diego State by at least nine points each, and three of those four loses were at home. Scott Frost has gone 9-15 in his first two seasons at Nebraska. He went 6-12 in Big 10 games and lost three non-conference games, including two loses to Colorado and a home game to Troy in 2018. Neither Kelly nor Frost would have done better than 7-6 in 2018 and 6-7 in 2019.
