30 Players in 30 Days #13 — Demond Demas

August 5, 2020
18,856

Position: WIde Receiver
Classification: Freshman
Hometown: Tomball, TX
Listed Height: 6-4
Listed Weight: 195

Key notes from Olin’s analysis on Demas

  • I think he is going to be a great player. The question is when will he be a great player? In his freshman year or next year?

  • The ability is there and you see it in his highlight tape, but you can see his athleticism in the crazy moves he makes. He didn't play all year, but he went and played in this all-star game and was incredible.

  • I remember when Roy Williams was at Texas. He caused some commotion at Texas. Demond Demas strikes me as someone who could have that kind of impact. I think Demond Demas is going to end up being better than Roy Williams.

  • Demas has everything you want in a receiver. I like how he tries to recruit for A&M. I like everything about this kid. Sticking it out at Tomball after the whole situation with the UIL tells me a lot about his character. He was doing it to help his family. Everything about this kid is something to like. I like how he carries himself. He committed early and stuck with it, even though there were plenty of people trying to poach him.

  • His comments on signing day remind me of a Michael Irvin quote from when they were playing Oklahoma. Irvin said to get some zone help on him and the defensive backs could come join him in the NFL. Playing one-on-one would land you in the arena league. Demond strikes me as that kind of player.

  • Picking up the offense and acclimating to college football is going to be a process for him, but even if it doesn't come easy for him, there will be a role for him. I think you could just run Demond deep and have plenty of success.

  • Another guy that comes to mind is Julio Jones as a freshman at Alabama. Demond could have a very similar impact as Jones did in his first year. It'll depend on when he can figure out what he's supposed to do on each play.

  • Demond Demas, just by being on the field - even if the ball isn't coming to him - will make the offense more dangerous. It'll stretch the defense which will give all of the other offensive weapons plenty of space to operate. He will get doubled, which will open it up even more.

  • On the first play of every game, I think they should throw it deep to him. If it's complete or not, you're telling the opposing defense that he's somebody they're going to have to watch for the entire day.

  • I look at Demond not playing last year the same as a guy who misses his senior year of high school with an injury. Demani Richardson didn't play as a senior, and look at the impact he had as a true freshman last year.

Any idea why Demond isn't getting any playing time?

Probably hasn't earned it during practices. Achane got in the game and played well; even picking up the blitz well.

Jimbo hasn't been shy about playing true freshman providing they earn it.

I know he saw some action in the Alabama game but I haven't seen him since. I hope he can get on the field and help us out. We need some more quality receivers!

WR is definitely a position of need.

I can only assume staff doesn't think he's ready. Gotta be hard to go from skipping a senior football season to trying to suit up and play in a college game. Sure he was working out and doing football activity, but it's gotta be a world of difference strapping up the pads and actually going into a game. I gotta think by the end of the season we see him getting some run. Hopefully we can get up big on somebody soon and get him a full quarter or so in a game.

Well that will accomplish nada. If we get up big, we ain't throwing the ball.

This level of physicality is something he's never dealt with. Hes pretty much been limited to 7 on 7 since his JR year, and he's no longer a man among boys like the last time he wore full pads.

The receiver position is arguably the easiest position to make a transition too from outside the sport than anywhere else. It's not like the guy has never played football before. If he is truly as talented as his rankings indicate, I don't see why we don't plug him in situationally to take the top off the defense.

you can make all the excuses you want for why he's not playing a LOT but if he's a freak of nature talent is there any excuse not to put him out there once or twice a game and say run straight down the field as fast as you can and when we throw it to you outathlete their guy for the ball?

Could be any number of reasons why he hasn't seen the field much. Nobody knows.

Each player identified in the 30 Players in 30 Days should be updated to reflect on how they've panned out thus far. Would be good Bye Week reading material.

Not a good sign. Too early to tell but we do have a lengthy track record of wasting talent.

If Demas doesn't know why he's not in games yet, then he should bring it up with his position coach instead of letting the Zoo get in his head...

And you know how talented this player is by what? It's maddening that people can't see that he's not playing because he's not ready to play. There's zero reason to hold players out from an eligibility standpoint, so, he's obviously not ready, Jimbo gets paid to win, Demas helps that, he's out there.

It's the coaches job to get him ready. The kid comes in with more than enough talent and should be getting reps with 2 starters out. You know its concerning, you just don't want to believe it. At some point A&M needs to figure out how to get production out of their highly rated recruits. Again, it's still way early but given our wr situation and this being a freebie year of eligibility, why not play him assuming he isn't out for injury or discipline issues.

He will get bored, transfer to OU and be an All-American in his first year.

His last game action before this year was scrimmage against AM consol before he was ruled ineligible. He wasn't hurt. He is very fast with pads on and can help now situationally. He doesn't know the playbook and that is keeping him on the sideline. He is better knowing 25% of the playbook than anyone we are running out there now. I have seen him live twice and he is the type of wr they have at Bama and OU.

What I know is Just because a guy is fast and can do some backflips doesn't mean anything. If this guy was Jaylen Waddle, 2.0, he'd be out there. Jimbo has a team to coach, not one player. I expect, and hope, it's a 100% meritocracy on who is playing and who is not.

Don't understand why if you are going to work hard with The Footwork King why wouldn't you learn the offense? Is that on Jimbo ? There was no way for him to at least get a head start on what Jimbo wanted to do while he was not playing his senior year ? Not saying hand a high school senior our playbook but there is no information exchange ? Just stay in shape and we will start from scratch day one ? If so that's bs.
If I commit that early I want to know what to be working on.

My Theory:

I saw Dee Dee at the VB game this week.
His frame is very lean - Maybe somewhere in the 1 to 5% body fat range at most.

He is muscular and toned for his frame - but it is not SEC level muscle for a WR at this point.
I fully believe that he is smart enough to learn the play book and
how to engage DB's in blocking techniques for run plays.

But I am not sure he can get off of the DB from pushing him off of his route.
I would think the more physical SEC BD's will push him around and disrupt the route & timing.
Thus causing K Mond to check off of him and target another receiver.
Jimbo needs a WR who will win those battles more times that not.

Another year in the weight room to develop muscle for leverage and fighting off DBs
will serve him very well. I have a strong believer in Dee Dee's future and
am grateful that he is an Aggie.

I feel like you can teach a 7th grader to read coverages for a go or post route. I would think we could find 2-4 plays a game for him. However, I trust Jimbo knows what he's doing even if I don't.

Waddle played sparingly outside of special teams his freshman year. Granted we don't have Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs playing WR for us

None of the true freshman WR's are seeing the field. Lane is a redshirt freshman. I think we need to tap the brakes here. When he demonstrates on Sunday-Friday that he's ready he'll get his shot. This isn't a conspiracy to suppress a player.

this is not true in Jimbo's offense. The receiver position is one of the hardest to learn because of all the option routes.

Well I guess the USCe game dispelled that notion.

There are lots of rules during recruiting every staff has to navigate, even for committed recruits.
