Make no mistake about it--the dominance the Aggies experienced during the late 80's and early 90's all started because of Sherrill and Murray.

I remember watching a young A&M squad get destroyed by Okie St. in 1983. The only glimmer of hope that day was a backup quarterback who came in late in the game and was named starter the next week.

While his injury was devastating, he returned from it and became the measuring stick (along with Bucky) against which all other Aggie quarterbacks are judged.

I had the opportunity to meet him a year or so ago. He was wearing an Aggie hat and still loves A&M--even gives his brother crap for being a sip.

Wasn't Gavin McCloud's name Murry on the Mary Tyler Moore show??

See, there you have it.

Murray was only 23 when he declared himself draft-eligible so age wasn't a factor.

Murray had the ankle injury in '84. He played very well for 2 seasons afterwards so that injury couldn't have been a "career-ending" injury like Joe Theismann's. If Murray had another serious injury that kept him out of the NFL, it didn't happen in a game.

Anyone who saw Murray run before his injury and after know how much it affected his running ability. Every run he made after he came back was a tremendously fast limp, but limp nonetheless. What it didn't affect was his confidence and leadership ability. The 86 game against SMU (pre death penalty when they still had a real team) was one of the best games i have ever seen. Murray would not let us lose, as long as he got the ball last.He simply willed us to win. Of course it didnt hurt to have Keith Woodside that day, bad ankle and all.

OK, just to be an @$$: technically you can't break an ankle. The ankle isn't a bone. The ankle is made up of bones in your foot joining bones in your leg.

You can't break a joint. You can tear ligaments and break bones that will destroy the ability of that joint to function properly.

Danny Kniffen taught us that in athletic injuries.

Murray was a stud.

Yes, Murray was a very good QB. But considering the baggage he brought with him and the NCAA scrutiny that created, I was happy he left early.

In answer to the post above saying Toombs was the best FB we've ever had -- I strongly disagree. I'd list at least 3 others ahead of Toombs, beginning with George Woodard.

kevin murray was without a doubt THE greatest Ag QB EVER!! he had the full package resurrecting Ag football from the ashes. Johnny Football doesnt even come close way too one dimensional as evidenced by his huge success in the CFL ha. after 2 years it was way past time for johnny to leave his ego much larger than kyle field could hold!!! i still see the picture in the houston post of murrays ankle twisted 180 degrees his toes practically touching the back of his knee!! unfortunate for he never fully recovered no doubt woulda been the greatest Ag QB in the NFL!!! thanks to kevin for some great times and memories!!!

He was great. His comeback over BU was amazing. Too bad his off-field stuff kept him out of NFL.

Not to keep Kevin's thread alive, but I did not realize we got waxed by Okie Lite in 1983. Since we beat them in a bowl in Tom Wilson's last game before Wilson was fired, that had to have created some doubters in Jackie. If there had been TexAgs in 1983 through the Arkansas game in 1984 (0-28 loss), I am guessing the pumper versus banger threads would have been epic.

He was more capable physically but not as mature in decisions and leadership ability. Was great before and after

I hate it when staff just deletes a post. It messes up the timeline and **** looks out of order.

For example it looks like you bumped the thread now.

Pre-injury, Kevin was the best QB in A&M history. He was a college superstar. He
could run like a deer, but he thought like
a true QB, always looking for the open man.
Bucky was a winner and a great player, but
Kevin was a winner and a great quarterback.

I don't accept the "forcing it in" argument,
unless it applies to a college age Marino, et al. Kevin's confidence in his arm was well-justified and only the OSU Cotton Bowl game
did it not work out. Even then, we were going
to lose if he didn't make eye-popping plays.

If anyone doubts the impact Murray had on our ofense and program, they should research how
we played just prior to and immediately after he took the reins.

He was one of the greatest players in A&M and
Southwest Conference history and his horrible injury against a crap team (Arkie St.) remains
one of the most disappointing blows ever to the A&M program. I still believe that many don't realize how great he was - smart, confident, and gifted - a great leader. When a healthy Murray had the ball, you knew we would win.
How can you say he was the best in A&M history? Did you witness any others, pre 50's to current times? Murray was an egotistical, arrogant ass. I don't recall him winning the Heisman. Disappointing blow to the A&M program? Craig Stump replaced Murray on the field and took A&M to the Cotton Bowl. Doesn't sound like he was missed.

Kevin Murray had an uncanny ability to calmly stand in the pocket and go through the progressions but seemed to have a sixth sense about when things were closing in on him and escape in the nick of time. Johnny had a similar ability but moved around in the pocket more as he went through the progressions.

Thanks for the explanation on what happened as it didn't make any sense.

Some some random rookie poster bumps a thread makes a post pro K Murray and it's deleted? Why

Sometimes staff will edit a moderated post and put a note telling the poster that they were banned or something. Sometimes the moderator just deletes the post entirely (as in this case) when it is flagged or if it is obvious trolling.

ETA: As was the case with this post, I assume staff thought it was an obvious troll attempt and because the poster was a rook they probably figured it wasn't worth leaving a note. Probably a sip troll.

Craig Stump did not lead A&M to a Cotton Bowl; Kevin was the QB responsible for success in the 1985 & 1986 seasons

1987 SWC Championship team had Craig Stump, Lance Pavlas and one J.P. "Bucky" Richardson take meaningful snaps. An awesome recruiting class featuring lots of contributing freshmen carried that team.

Craig Stump was a better punter than QB, but he had a really good game against Arkansas in 87 and lead us to a win.

Yep...and I had 50 yard line seats in the Ohio State section...
