I want Jimbo to address this at his on-field natty celebration interview.

Coaches vote based on the overall ability of a team as compared to others at the time of the poll, not a prediction of end of season rank. They leave that to the talking heads. The article may have missed that point.

Guess it depends if you rank based on the quality of the team or try to predict the final record.. If your ranking is to try to predict our final win lose record we may be overranked..

We could indeed have 3 loses, but be favored to beat most 1 and two loss teams.

Better to start ranked lower for BAS purposes

That article doesnt really say we are overrated as much as it says it will be tough to stay that high with our schedule

Fair enough. Would probably have to win 10 to finish 11th. I understand why they dont believe it happens.

Seems like a fair assessment. Good team, but heading straight for a Mac truck of a schedule.

Teams are largely ranked on record in the end.

Are the rankings based on who are the top 20 teams, or who will have the best season ending record?

Big difference

We win 10 in the right order (clemnson/georgia loss) we are in playoff.
Win SEC west
Win SEC
Hard to keep the SEC 2-loss champ to ACC champ and winning the SEC against a team that had just beat them.
And with the easily the hardest SoS right now and likely end of year.

If this happens and Clemson is 13-0, Alabama is 11-1, and 2 of Big 12 Champ/B1G Champ/Pac 12 Champ is 13-0 or 12-1..... we would be left out of the playoff.

Yeah I agree.
We are not No 11.

I would say we are near the end, maybe 20-25. I want us to prove to the world otherwise.

If you make this list of over-rated and leave off a four loss Texas who is replacing 8 defensive starters. Then I do not know about your list. If you are looking at schedule only and the fact they could be average and win 9 or 10 Then OK. If you are truly looking at "best" teams then No.

I meant 10 including the bowl.

Crazier things have happened, but 10-2 and winning the SECw is probably 1/100 right now.

We will win 8 regular season games this year. And that will be a great season given our schedule.

For most "journalists" 8 wins will look the same as 30 other teams.

Agreed... the article is fair. It isn't slamming us, merely pointing out we have the toughest schedule in CFB

Not a fraud, but they have to sign up 2 other coaches before voting.

The reasoning in that article makes no sense. It basically talks up our program then states that we are over ranked because of our daunting schedule. Also, wouldn't an 11th ranked team be expected to lose to a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th ranked team anyway. An overrated team would lose to teams ranked lower than them not greater.

Isn't this ranking based on all information available at the time and not an expectation of where teams end up at the end of the year? Does Paul Myerberg actually get paid to write this trash?

But they're fine with Florida at #8.

But the polls should never be just win/loss records in order. It should be a ranking of team quality. The wins and losses vs other ranked teams just shows us the quality. The polls continue to get this wrong every year.

If #5 beats #6 in a close game, why should either team move up or down? It just validates that the ranking were correct. Yet, the way the voters react is to always punish or reward the two teams for the outcome that was supposed to happen.

What I'm getting at, is year after year, we have SEC teams filling up the top 25. And as the result of playing each other and the fact that one team has to lose, for some reason voters punish the loser for having a tougher schedule. If we end up at 8-4 this year with losses to #1, #2, #3, and #6 does it really make sense that we should finish any lower than #11? Yet, any voter who sees the numbers 8 and 4 together would never put that team at #11 heading into the bowl season. The schedules become irrelevant.

If you actually look at the schedules I don't think it is possible for that many SEC west teams to be ranked that high since we all play each other. I see us with 3-4 loses which would put us closer to 20

The headline and the lede are at odds:

Headline: "Five teams overrated in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll"

Introductory Paragraph: "When it comes to this year's Amway Coaches Poll, here are five teams that expected to fall short of their preseason billing."

Editor likely figured the latter wasn't flashy enough and went with something a little more clickbait-y.

If everyone on the team feels they have something to prove and willing to do what it takes then they are ranked where they should be.
Agsuffering@bulaw

The ranking system does not effectively measure team quality. That is everyone's beef and they are correct.

Sagarin could have us finishing 85 (usually means 8-9 wins even in the SEC) and have us top 10. But 9-4, unless 2 wins are Clem/Bama/UGA, we do not finish ranked 11th.

Vegas has us winning 7.5 games (pre-bowl), with Jimbo. 9-4 would probably be a good result, as Lat said. But the MSM would give little love for being a good team in the best division.

I said earlier that it was a fair assessment, b/c according to the rules of the rigged rankings game, it is. NO, the MSM does not effectively analyze football. They are pretty little PR people. Those who know football are employed by the NFL, colleges, or casinos.
