Don't mess with the best Regular season in all of sports for a couple lame post Season games!

How dare you threaten the committee.

Nobody outside the top 4 deserves a chance. I'd argue that some years there's clearly a best team and the playoffs aren't needed at all. I'd rather have a MAXIMUM of 4 teams than guaranteed 4 teams.

Nvm. That didn't make sense

Na, I had an idea but it wasn't very well thought out, and when I typed it out I realized it didn't make sense.

Theres alway an unofficial layer of play off games. Conference championships. Just have the committee put a bit more weight in them & bam! you're there.

Who are the millennials and what are the participation trophies in this context?

Some elaboration would help me process your insight.

Amazes me that there are still people who think expanding the " playoff" will devalue the regular season.
It will actually do the exact opposite.
It will add more value, it will add more teams in the playoff discussion, it will add more meaningful games, It will add more excitement.

It will do all of that, but The more you expand the playoffs, each game becomes a little less important in a stand alone sense; meaning you can lose 1 game and you will still control your own destiny and in some cases you could lose 2 games and still make it, thus each individual game has "less value"

The End result of an expanded playoff is that more games have value but each game by itself has less value

It's just that simple.

There's more to it than that. Every year there's teams with a lower strength of schedule that go indefeated or one-loss. Those teams should have a chance to play in the playoffs. 2014 TCU, undefeated UCF to make a few.

It's BS to use the excuse that it devalues the regular season. Not all teams have the chance to win every regular season game and have a chance to take down Alabama in a playoff game.

Expand the playoffs like EVERY OTHER major sports league, collegiate or pro.

Although I DO love March Madness, I always revert to the example of....
(From 2014 UConn team) Does anyone really believe that a 7 seed playing an 8 seed (with 10 losses) for the Natty is really a clear indicator of a "National Champion".
Tourney Champ? Sure. "Best in the Nation?" Enh...
Without there being 64 teams, those two maybe arent even in it.

I would like an 8 team playoff. Sixteen would be silly. It's not basketball. Each game take a toll and when was the last time a 16 team could remotely sniff beating any of the top teams 3times much less once.

How would you make a 5 team playoff work? Give Alabama a bye in the first round every year?

12 team playoff
All P5 champions make playoffs
Highest ranked G5 makes playoffs - at least they have a chance vs way it is now
6 highest ranked at large teams make playoffs
Seeds 1-4 get a 1st round bye
Seeds 1-4 host 2nd round vs winners of 1st round games

Teams not making playoffs and qualifying for bowl games
lower tier bowl games played during week prior to Christmas
upper tier bowl games played between Christmas and New Years during week

This would guarantee the best teams have a chance, the regular season still matters because you still want the 1st round bye if possible. Plus teams will pull out all the stops to make the playoffs, especially if you outside the top 4. As it stands now, if you are not Top 5, your games basically do not matter.

Playoff would have looked like this in 2018

1st Round (week after conf champ games)
---------------------------------------------------------
#12 Penn State @ #5 Georgia
#11 LSU @ #6 Ohio State
#10 Florida @ #7 Michigan
#9 Washington @ #8 UCF

2nd Round (week following 1st round)
--------------------------------------------------
#8 vs #9 winner @ #1 Alabama
#7 vs #10 winner @ # 2 Clemson
#6 vs #11 winner @ # 3 Notre Dame
#5 vs #12 winner @ #4 Oklahoma

Semi-finals (played at current hosting bowl game sites - like now)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
winner of #1 vs #8-9 winner....vs....winner of #4 vs #5-12 winner
winner of #2 vs #7-10 winner....vs....winner of #3 vs 36-11 winner

National Championship as is now

And for an 8 team playoff, how about this format?

4 - Champions of SEC, B1G, ACC, and PAC12
4 - Highest ranked teams remaining
Require independents to join a football conference (BYU, Notre Dame, Army, UMass, etc). if they want ot be in the playoff.

Conference winners automatically make it into the final 8 playoff.

Top 6

3 games in the first round. 1 vs 2; 3 vs 4; 5 vs 6
The winner of 1 vs 2 gets a bye week while the other 2 winners play each other for a spot in the championship game.

Could be fun and it makes the 3-6 ranked teams play an extra game to "earn" their way into the championship game.

Seems like you're missing one of the "Power" conferences. I can't seem to recall which one at the moment unfortunately so it's probably not even a very good conference.

More logic. The 16th team in basketball is a 4 seed in the tournament.

And what do you think bowl games are?

The bowl games serve the purpose of:
Winners- we're awesome, we beat ...
Look at the momentum we've created
Hope our recruits saw that
Their conference sux
Losers: just a bowl game
Didn't want to be there anyway
Nobody will even remember this.

I always laugh when the same people who whine about expanding the playoffs are the same ones who also insist the #5 Aggies were the best team in the nation at the end of the 2012 season.

Kinda blows up the argument that the #5 team shouldn't get a shot to prove they are the best team.

6 team playoff.

Top 2 teams get a bye.

#3 plays #6
#4 plays #5

Winner of #3/6 plays #1
Winner of #4/5 plays #2

Championship game the following week.

I don't see the point of having any more than the top 6 teams in the playoff. The quality level drops off pretty quickly after that. Also, don't even think about conference champion tie-ins. The BDF and Pac-12 don't deserve automatic qualifiers.

What also gets lost in the silly participation trophy argument is that under the current system we literally hand out a boat load of actual participation trophies in the form of every other bowl game outside the playoff.

Our participation trophy from last year!

Behold our championship trophies and hats*

You mean to tell me a bunch of 6 year olds didn't purchase and distribute their own participation trophies!?

But that would mean it was....... the parents!
