The argument on here many have is " expanding the playoff would devalue the regular season"

I think that's 100% false and expanding the playoffs would add value to more regular season / conference title games.

Is Georgia one of the top 4 teams.. yes
Will they get in.. probably not. They had their " playoff games "yesterday and they lost.

But if we had 8 teams we would be looking possibly the following

1st round
#8 Michigan @ #1 Bama
#5 Georgia @ #4 Oklahoma

#7 UCF @ #2 Clemson
#6 Ohio State @ # 3 Notre Dame

Geez.. and we are wasting our time with half those teams playing in meaningless bowl games.
4 teams is not a playoff

4 is better than 2

It's a progression

As time goes the system will be tweaked And more teams will be added

For now, be happy we have 4 instead of 2 like it used to be,
Because then one undefeated power 5 team would have gotten left out , which is EXACTLY the scenario in which the 4 team playoff was created to fix

It took an eternity to get away from only polls, then only two teams via BCS.. 8 teams will happen within 10 years, maybe 5

This system is perfect. Every team that has a right to play for the NC is getting a chance. All the arguing for #4/#5 would just shift to arguing about #8/#9 if you epanded to 8.

Truth is - it doesn't matter who is #4. It's just one extra team needed to reach an even number greater than 2.

Nope. Still prefer 4.

It makes all required to schedule quality OOC games. With 8 you can play nobodies and just win the conference.

With 4 if all conference champs from P5 go undefeated, whomever has the worst win (ie against a nobody) will likely be out. That is good - teams need to win the conference AND beat quality teams.

Disagree. Teams sitting at 9 aren't near as much deserving as 5 and 6 for sure. 8 is a great number. No auto bids, just the 8 best teams, period

8 teams don't deserve a shot at the playoff. I have no interest in seeing Bama beat UCF by 30.

Agreed. I don't think anyone thinks that in an eight team playoff that Washington would deserve to be in.

Even in your own scenario, you have clearly demonstrated how you devalue the regular season. The Michigan- Ohio State game would have been meaningless in your 8 game playoff scenario. As it stands now, that was an exciting elimination game in the regular season.

With that line of thinking or should just be 2 teams then.

There will always be some sort of controversy over the last spot.
I don't think an 8 team playoff eliminates that completely. But it puts more teams in the conversation.
Who wouldn't want to see 4 additional deserving teams go?

Michigan being in at 8 isn't fair to Florida! UF beat LSU and had to play UGA while Michigan lost by 40 to OSU!!!

So I guess you're next Gonna tell me the college basketball season offers no big matchups , no storylines and it's regular season is meaningless because 65 teams Goto the tournament .. right?

Adding more teams puts more teams in the conversation -and creates more meaningful games.

Michigan nor Ohio state is getting in playoff so yeah I think there game this year was meaningless if you want look at it that way

Eventually it will get to 8 teams. The weekend after the conference championships would be the first round, with games held on the campuses of the top 4 schools. Then the usual Peach/Sugar/Fiesta/Cotton/Orange/Rose rotation as the semi-final games with the non-playoff NY6 bowls as consolation bowls for the quarterfinals losers and other top 12 finishers that missed the playoffs.

It makes sense, but I think it will at least be a few more years til the playoff is expanded. The forcing function would be if there was a powerhouse team year where there were more than 4 undefeated teams after conference champ weekend. Right now, there are only 4 and UCF doesn't belong as their strongest wins are Memphis and Cincinnati...and Memphis got dog-stomped by Mizzou.

Hell no... the team that needs to be in it is in it. Bama, they are the best team end of story. No wannabe's need to even be playing. It's designed to find out who the best team is. That will happen. Dont need 8 to find out. Georgia has 2 losses. End of story. They are not the best. The best will win out. no matter the bottom. You people are so dense.

This
I don't honestly see how anyone could say more teams devalues the regular season . No it creates more meaningful games.

Poster claims Michigan - Ohio state as meaningless in an 8 team playoff.
No .. Ohio state still had to win that game to be in the top 8
So how is that game " devalued"

People claiming expansion will " devalue" the regular season is the worst argument of all.
Dead wrong

The problem is that you have a one-loss ou that has zero defense, played a bunch of nobodies in their conference and went to overtime against Army is likely going to get in ahead of Georgia, who lost to the #1 team and lost to l$u in Baton Rouge. Tell me how that is fair.

When it goes to 8 teams, we'll start seeing several teams with 2 losses and then more people will be pissed. Just saying.

And i'm For a bigger playoff pool.

Did you watch the game yesterday? Georgia may have two losses, but they were the only team that has remotely competed on Bama's level this season.

By your own logic, UCF "won out" but are they the best? Likely not, considering they needed to come from far behind twice against ACC powerhouse Memphis this season. They won't even be considered by the playoff committee because of their terrible schedule. Context definitely matters.

The college basketball season is pretty meaningless. Sure there are big matchups, but it doesn't really matter who wins or loses since both those teams are going to make the tournament either way.

In Div2 and Div3 football, they have a big playoff and 7 win teams get in. In the NFL you don't even have to have a winning season to make the playoffs. Is that what you want?

Have to eliminate independents
This plan would definitely give some independents motivation to join conferences (ex BYU), but if they were ranked high enough they could get one of the at large bids (like ND this year).
