In the original meaning of the word, no. A rout is when a unit or entire army runs from the battlefield in chaos. Our players never quit and would have kept fighting even if Tua remained in the game.

However in modern sports terms, which usually means a lopsided game, yes. They beat us very solidly.

I'll agree with the OP. It was demoralizing and ugly but it wasn't a rout. To me, a rout implies no ability to score or stop the other side from scoring. We were able to do both on occasion. 77-0 in Norman, now that was a rout.

They could have scored 60+ had they been motivated to do so.

Definitely a rout and I agree with most of what you said here, except with Bama "called off the dogs". On offense maybe, but they had alot of their starters on D play until the end and they were blitzing all the way until the last play of the game (even when we brought in our 2nd string QB).

Seeing as we did not retreat in a disorderly manner, I would say we were not routed.

Rewatching it now. In the redzone with a chance to go to 21-17 with 4mins in the half. Such a momentum swing for the remainder of the half.

The definition of rout is a decisive defeat. That perfectly describes the game. The good news is we expected to be 2 -2 and there are plenty of winnable games left on the schedule.

A rout is a big drink from Sonic. I personally pronounce it "root" like in the song...... Get your kicks on route 66, but at Sonic, they call it a rout.
