In the performance video posted on Facebook, at the 7:00 mark, the two drum majors flanking the block T start at the same 40 yard line. By the time the T breaks up, the one on the student side is 5 yards ahead of the one on the alumni side.

Wha happuned?

I just watched on YouTube and there was no mistake. You must have watched from a weird angle on your video.

Since this is a "band thread".. I noticed that the Clemson band played during active plays on the field.. Is the Aggie Band not allowed to play during live action?

Bands are not supposed to be playing at all once play resumes on the field. The Band follows this rule closely

Some bands really stretch it to the breaking point. The refs can flag them but I've never seen it happen.

It was two guys on a field with 300+. It was not obvious, but I can't believe they would start at the same point, march mirrored paths, and one end up 5 yards ahead of the other, and that would be "correct".

Watch the video. Start at 7:00.

Can't explain why, but if you count steps, the Infantry Band Drum Major (student side) steps off from the 40 in the block T and immediately starts taking roughly 5 steps per 5 yards. The Artillery Band Drum Major (alumni side) was taking the normal 6 steps to 5 yards. Don't know if he thought he was behind or what. And I totally missed this during the game.

I went back and watched the first drill of the season, and both side drum majors were positioned 4 steps in front of where the bass drums are in the stem of the T. In the Clemson game, they are 6 steps behind the bass drums. So again, maybe he thought he was behind. When I was a side drum major, your position might vary by a couple steps one way or the other depending on your location just prior to going from block band to the T..... but it was all predetermined during drills leading up to each halftime performance.

Hope that helps .

Former BQ here. It looks like one is taking larger steps than the other. There should be 6 steps per 5 yards. One of them is doing that, the other is taking larger steps. I doubt it was intentional, as I can't recall any situations when we would take different sized steps when going north to south or vice versa. But I also wasn't a Drum Major. Wasn't very obvious, though.

Drum major on the student side got excited and forgot that is six steps per 5 yards. Simple as that.

Thanks, guys. Was indeed not very noticeable, but I just saw at the end that they were in different position, and my OCD prompted me to back it up and see why.

I recall a comment many moons ago where a BQ said that, especially early in the season, a drill may have a few errors like this that very few people notice. Like the team, the product at the end of the season is doing much more complex stuff and doing it better than the simple stuff at the beginning of the season.

Cheers.

I saw it live and figured something was off. But it's a drum major so it wasn't a big deal.

There was another error in the drill. Kind of disappointing given the simplicity of the drill. Also saw one guy walk off the field. Never seen that before. I looked to see if he was hurt but didn't seem like anything was wrong. Guess he just couldn't be bothered to run. New Army BQs.

But then again, what do I know.

A few thoughts on the band...I feel like the students have never seen a marching band. When the basses counter march save the oogghh oooggh for the bass rank. Sounds terrible doing it for every bass. Reserve that for the whitebelts on the bass rank.

Former BQs would have a clue. All you have to do is watch the video and hear the sounds the student section make every time a Bass (tuba) changes direction to march the other way.

Hold up on any judgement. Saw the BQ walk off at the end of the drill for both games. I suspect it may be due to a medical issue but do not know.

Noticed one of the bass players do the double square corners turn when all the others did the swinging pivot. He ended up about two steps behind his mates. Sorry if my lingo is off, I never carried the briefcase.

I've only seen it happen once.

Back in the first few years of the Big XII, the Colorado band would continually play past the snap...even at Kyle Field. It was pi$$ing everyone off. Finally, the refs threw a flag that gave our offense a first down.

They stopped doing that after that play.

Someone inform ftab that we are aware of their transgressions, and we expect them to rectify the situation. We won't suffer second place at halftime.

I wanted to weigh in on this issue, but the view from the pylon cam was inconclusive, so I guess I'll have to let OPs call stand.
