Sam Torn discusses 2018 Kyle Field gameday enhancements

Key notes from Sam Torn interview

  • What we try to do is create the finest game day atmosphere in America. We know for sure that the thing that makes the best game day atmosphere is winning, and we will with Jimbo Fisher. We may not win a National Championship this year, but we will win and Kyle Field is going to be awesome.

  • As far as what we are doing at Kyle Field, I want to make sure you listeners here at TexAgs understand exactly why we are doing this. The fact of the matter is in college football there is a declining attendance, while Texas A&M is more insulated, we are not immune to it. As generational change occurs, it is very important that the experience be relevant, so we are able to keep attracting a great people. We studied eleven different areas, with over 150 people. Last year we implemented a few things in-game, and surveyed a wide array of fans after the season and had a tremendous response. Including a tremendous response from our young people and our students.

  • We have a younger generation of fans, our game day experience is driven by fans. We have a minimum of 31,000 student fans at Kyle Field. The atmosphere is driven by students. We put in a music operator that is a subtle word for a DJ. That was very well received by students, younger fans, by football players, and by recruits. Not as well received by older fans. We will continue with the music operator job. His role is to never step on the band to never step on the yell leaders, but fill in where needed.

  • Jimbo Fisher has a few things that are important to him. As you know Jimbo has bought fully into Aggieland, so the 12th Man is very important to Jimbo. So on the team entrance he wants the 12th Man to be more emphasized, so we have a huge flag that either Cullen Gillaspia, or someone else will be running out with. He wants to emphasize that the first five minutes of the second half has to be high energy coming out at halftime that is very important to him. The fourth quarter is also very important to Jimbo, so we have been working with 12th Man Productions and the football team on creating something special going into the fourth quarter. You will see all of these things in terms of our game day presentations.

  • In addition, we have added two new tailgate towers. We have added a Pepsi market on the southeast activation tower with a large variety of concessions and we are working with Levy. Our deputy director of athletics has made it her mission to work with Levy. Under her direction they have restructured their staff, reorganized how they do things and they have added some things. I can tell you a lot work has been done. We also thought we could do better in out fan zone. There will be live music every game, a huge kids area with inflatables, and eleven different food trucks, local vendors right out there in the fan zone for folks.

  • We are going to use the Hall of Champions in a much more interactive way. One thing we are doing this year is we are opening Reed Arena and Blue Bell Park so that fans that need to get out of the heat and use a nice clean restroom can use those two facilities.

  • Our two goals were to make the most intimidating environment possible so we can win, and secondly to provide a superior fan experience so that fans will come to the games and see what we have for them.

  • We already have the best experience there is in college football. It is important to keep things that are iconic and unique to Texas A&M. We are not messing with anything. The five top things from the survey were Aggie traditions in the stadium, being part of the 12th Man, and we will continue to make sure we do that.

  • We will be moving to digital ticketing and digital parking, that won’t happen this year but in the future. It’s a digital world and we are trying to touch every area. Menu options is another big one, so many are gluten-free so we are going to continue to expand our options in that area as well.

  • We will still be doing the “That’s a fighting Texas Aggie First Down” and the reason why is because when we surveyed we found out that the students liked it, and the football players liked it. The football players really like it because it recognizes offensive success but mainly because it really bugs the opposing defense. There even has been moments where the opposing team has turned around and made obscene gestures at Aggie fans after we do that. We understand that it is controversial but we are keeping it because the students and football players like it. We consulted with the yell leaders, and they felt like it was the right thing to do. It really was more their call.

  • All of this is because we have great cooperation between the university, the athletic department, and the twelfth man foundation. The understanding of the twelfth man all of our fans and keeping what you need push we will keep pushing the envelope because people change and times change.

With every new generation that comes along more things change. Either you evolve or get left behind. I trust what these people are doing.

I have never understood the idea of trying to fix something that AIN'T BROKE!!!

Kyle Field needed to be renovated, yes, but the gameday atmosphere did not need to be artificially changed!!

Making the Kyle Field gameday atmosphere similar to an NFL gameday atmosphere does not make it unique!! Matter in fact, it does the exact opposite. Why is it that we all can see this, but the powers-that-be can not?

Sincerely,

A disgruntled student

Go back and look at Kyle Field from the 30s and 40s. Many things changed from that era to the 50s and 60s. Things are always changing. If you look back in 25 years from now, all things related to Kyle field will look ancient. The current changes will look typical

2010 Nebraska didn't need canned music and first down yell for the best atmosphere we've had in the last 15 years or so....

THIS IS ATMOSPHERE, not all the BS they are trying to force to artificially create it......!!!

I am interested in how high energy is created in the third quarter. Critical time for the team of course, but with the band and fans filtering back to their seats after halftime, that 'music operator' may have some serious operating to do.

Ditch the DJ and the first down crap.

Sam needs to figure out who is providing the $$$$$. It ain't the students.

First off, they are going to inevitably have leading questions to people to make their changes look good or say that their feedback is great to justify the resources spent on the "Task Force" and the changes they made.

Ontop of that, a lot of times people don't even know what they truly want in a quick 5 minute questionaire. If Apple would have used this "Task Force" along with surveys/focus groups from hundreds of people, they would have ended up with a piece of junk phone that had neon lightnight bolts and a hundred buttons on the device rather than the iconic, intuitive design that pushed smartphones forward.

Who knows what changes I would have proposed to the Kyle Field experience 10 years ago as a student.

Make no mistake about it, if that same game was played with the same result in "New Kyle" the atmosphere would be the same. Possibly louder given a bigger crowd and a fully enclosed stadium

Yall are just looking for things to get salty over

I guess with this forward thinking in charge, if the coeds would like to sit old Sam will get the old folks to pay for backs on the bleachers and let the Corps be the 12th Man or maybe just appoint 12 students to stand.

How tone deaf can Sam and his task force be? Making decisions strictly on what 17-23 year-olds want? All they know is high school pep squad and cheerleaders.

When I arrived, nobody asked me what I wanted. I got with the yell leaders' program and was proud of our uniqueness. It was the best atmosphere in college football and was intimidating. Remember the 1985 tu game when their QB complained about the noise?

It wasn't broken or even Torn. It was what most schools wished they had. Now Sam's DJ and other copycat ideas have ruined it. What in the Sam Hell were they thinking?

Shame on them. Thanks for hel...I mean hurting us. And don't play it again, Sam.

The NFL is all about DJs, music and "game atmosphere"...how is that working for their attendance numbers?

I can't believe we have people this misguided running the program.

Simple question I would like to see answered: Of all the people responsible for all these "upgrades" to the Kyle Field atmosphere, how many are wearing Aggie rings?

College is turning into the NFL, that's why you have the declining attendance IMO.
Higher priced tickets, NFL fabricated atmosphere, social media celeb players

And I'm also to point where people like Torn and any " game day committee" whatever the hell that is ... will do what they want to do and label it as " well that's what the students and football team wants" .

You clearly don't get what A&M has stand for. The people that actually provide the revenue are against all the BS they are trying to do!! A&M does not have a revenue issue, period!!

You are aliniating the people that actually bring the revenue, duh!

For a school so obsessed with tradition we sure are good at constantly changing them

The reason I don't attend anymore is simple...cost. I can't afford donations and tickets for a family of four. I usually make one game a year now. Stinks, but I'd rather watch it on TV (where the real revenue comes from) and spend the time with my kids.

Change does not necessarily imply evolving.

We absolutely have to evolve. Hell, even when I was a student there were yells we did that felt pretty cheesy/cringe inducing in 2003-2007. It is good that we're trying to evolve.

There's also a difference between evolving and re-inventing.

This needs a bump after last night. There is a laundry list of things that have gotten worse.

The most obvious is the atrocious 12th Man sign. Whomever made that decision should be extremely embarrassed; if not corrected, they should be fired.

It does not work as intended.
It looks like a half rate piece of work in the stadium - completely unfinished.
It looks muted and dull on TV.

I have yet to see anyone praise it. The best comment I have read so far was that it was "just fine". Other than that it has been all negative.

Went to the game last night...thought I'd pass along my thoughts. Feel free to pass along to Mr. Torn and the group of geniuses who continue to screw up a good thing.

What I Liked:
- Parson's Mounted Cavalry going down Houston St and turning left onto Joe Routt Blvd after they had marched into the stadium...don't know if this is new or not, but it was cool to see about an hour before kickoff
- Flyover
- The team entrance...meh. Whatever, at least they ditched the fireworks. Not a lot of conviction on this one, either way. It just seems like a mish-mash of theatrics and what not. I'd like to see them bing back the drumline.
- We ditched the "We are Live" or whatever it was that we used to say at the beginning of the game which made it sound like people were there for a WWE wrestling match.

What I Didn't Like:
- The DJ playing music during warm-ups while the team had their music going on the field...for Sam et al wanting to have a highly orchestrated production, this was way out of place and "amateur hour" at best.
- Speaking of the DJ...get rid of it/him/her/whatever. The students will be just fine without it, trust me. The majority of the fans paying the bills don't like it...it's too NFL and what everybody else does. It's okay if we're different and do things in a way unique to our university and fanbase...it's the unique nature of the 12th Man that I grew up loving about going to games at Kyle Field.
- Amplifying the band...really, do we need to artificially pump up the sound level of the band? From Section 309, it was pretty loud...can only imagine how loud it was for the fans near the speakers.
- The whole "first down" thing is so Alabama. Not sure why we think we need to copy them on this. It feels like we are duplicating the playbook of several of our SEC peers, which don't have the traditions of the 12th Man and thus have to resort to all these other bells and whistles to get their fans engaged.

I hope Mr. Torn is reading this after the game to continue to gain insight and suggestions to make improvements and enhance what it trying to be accomplished.

Some of my thoughts/suggestions after attending the game:

*12th man flag with team entrance to the field was great. - run sideline to side line with the flag after reaching the 50 yard line
*Liked the timeout official with the digital clock letting you know how much longer a commercial time would be
*DJ at least played a more variety of music - still do not think there should be so much music pumped in - play, but play less
*Even though players may like the "first down" cheer -- I still think is a very high school thing to do. They like it because they heard it in high school and were used to it. It is not intimidating at all and copies so many other schools as it is not unique.
* Need water kiosks or an express lane for water only at the concession stand to get a bottle of water. Ridiculous to have to stand behind a guy ordering 6 hot dogs, 3 nachos, 8 drinks, had all his friends standing around to haul off the order -- and then they couldn't get his credit card to work. I had to stand in line for 20 minutes to get 1 big bottle of water. (I know I can bring water in but in don't want to walk all over campus with it in my backpack)
*Couldn't hear the refs explain what was happening -- Alaka ejection, Lanfear uniform issue, etc
*The new 12th Man lighted signage was a big disappointment
*I sit on the The West side upper decks -- I believe there needs to more noise coming from that area -- almost like you need a "visor guy" every other section or so to help get more yelling going, etc
*Hopefully with better opponents and winning will get people to not use their cell phone so much and put that energy and attention to the game and making noise. (I know it is a pipe dream, but one can always hope)
