Supreme Court ruled today that sports betting is legal now. Enjoy!
I know nothing of the subject, why would the states do so if they can tax it and generate revenue off of it?crosswalk said:
It only struck down the federal law banning sports banning. Any state can still make it illegal.
Is this a paradox?AustinAg2012 said:
I bet tree-fiddy Texas won't legalize gambling.

The same argument can be made about casinos. Typically, these types of activities bring the worst of people to an area. Crime, drugs, destitute people...the whole gambit.
Why isn't marijuana legal yet?ottc777 said:I know nothing of the subject, why would the states do so if they can tax it and generate revenue off of it?crosswalk said:

The lobbies for those states, particularly Louisiana - where there are full-scale, not-just-Indian, casinos - will continue to work the Texas legislature such that there will be no sports betting in Texas, but wide open in Lake Charles, Shreveport, and New Orleans.W said:
Texas will legalize sports gambling.
Houston is too close to Louisiana and Dallas is too close to Oklahoma --- can't let those states take the revenue. Gotta keep it in state
You say that, but how many decades have we gone without gambling? It ain't gonna happen because the legislation is stupid and listen to the squeaky wheels that say that everything is the devil. As an example, look how long Lubbock was a dry county.W said:

I don't see an influx of people driving across the border just to place a few wagers on their favorite sports teams.Camino said:The lobbies for those states, particularly Louisiana - where there are full-scale, not-just-Indian, casinos - will continue to work the Texas legislature such that there will be no sports betting in Texas, but wide open in Lake Charles, Shreveport, and New Orleans.W said:

You know you don't have to participate, right?Quote:

Our economy is fine without it. It would only boost crime and Democrat house seats.

Depending on the size of the wager, it might be a "paradigm".Bobby Jimbo said:Is this a paradox?AustinAg2012 said:

So do you also think the lottery should be illegal?AlphaCharlieUniformAggie said:

I don't know if gambling states are the ass hole of the world because of the gambling or they were already world ass holes and just added gambling.
Montana looks like God's backyard but every corner store, mom&pop business and check cashing place has slot machines (pluarl). They are EVERYWHERE.
It hit would San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley really bad for sure.

I'm not trying to pass judgement; I've always bunched gambling and playing the lottery in the same category so I'm curious your opinion. The Texas Lottery has been around for over 20 years, and is a large windfall for our education system.
Well you're right about that. I agree that Texas' economy is fine, but if gambling taxation could be used for social services, road repairs, school, etc., would it still be a bad thing?AlphaCharlieUniformAggie said:texancanuck11 said:So do you also think the lottery should be illegal?AlphaCharlieUniformAggie said:

Of course I'm against the lottery.
They hold up the line at the corner store.
After putting one up in Lake Charles, I highly doubt he wants one here or in Galveston. He will fight with all his might to make sure that doesnt happen because his precious little resort in Lake Charles would become a ghost town. Ever go to Lauberge or Golden Nugget? 95% of the people you meet are from Houston.BQAG02 said:
I bet Tillman is just waiting to put up more Golden Nuggets everywhere.
