Merry Christmas Aggies!

Anyway, have we pretty much decided that we are waiting to announce the new DC until after his bowl game for contractual reasons? Like he is locked up and the deal is all but done.

Saw The Grinch is going to TOSU so assuming he is out, saw Chavis likely going without Chad to Arky after Bowl... so I am hoping it is Foster and he just wants to coach his last VaTech game and go out with class.

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

What makes you think it's a bowl game? Maybe we are waiting until after the Saints last game.

Not Foster.

But Elko or Schiano are definitely still in the mix, with Elko seemingly the favorite. Elko, Brown, or Schiano are good guesses.

Could be buyout or contract limitations. Same a Chavis had. Could be something like he can leave for a promotion/HC job w/o penalty, but not lateral.

It's not going to be Greg Schiano.

1. There would be moral outrage, whether rightfully earned or not. A&M won't face that heat.
2. Schiano can leave OSU now and there would be no penalty. His currently is finishing a one year contract that pays him $700,000. If he had left before 12/01/2017, he would have owed OSU $30,000.
3. OSU is not in the playoffs, so why wouldn't Fisher expect Schiano to be at A&M, helping with recruiting?

I've seen this a couple of times here, but what does "hang up and listen" mean? Maybe I'm old, but that makes no sense to me.

It's actually an old Talk Radio reference like when people call in to ask a question and don't want to debate they have to hang up the phone to listen to the radio or else they get interference. So they would ask the question and say "I'll hang up and listen" and then the radio host would know they were no longer on the line and could just speak generally to the entire audience with the answer.

Merry Christmas to you all.
Again I would not get my hopes up for Mike Elko I seriously doubt he is going to leave Notre Dame, he makes very good money (over 1 million a year), 2 years left on his contact and he really like it at Notre Dame. I have excellent sources in the athletic department and none of them are saying anything but positive things about Elko. I would also forget about Don Brown he loves it at Michigan with Harbaugh.

He may not be the guy, but being able to offer him significantly more than he currently makes is not an issue. And no one thought Jimbo was leaving either. In fact, it's very quiet on the DC front and I'm not hearing from any programs who think their DC is in jeapordy of leaving. Have you? Apparently this has been a handshake agreement (with whoever it is) for some time now and it seems like it's just a matter of fulfilling contract/personal/professional obligations before the contract is signed. It's been VERY tight lipped.

I think there's a better chance it's Elko than Brown to be honest.

The thing is, there's not a ton of current DCs (particularly DB based coaches) who still have bowl games left and haven't been explicitly eliminated. Elko happens to be one of them.
Irish75
How long do you want to ignore this user?
A lot of people knew Jimbo was leaving FSU 2-3 weeks at least before he left including a Notre Dame commit Housto Griffen who de committed from FSU 2 weeks before Jimbo left, heck even the media was asking him questions of a possibility of leaving FSU a month before he actually did. I It was not that well kept of a secret.

Something this big at Notre Dame would leak and nobody has said a word (coahes or players) and the payers and recruits especially the ones he is still recruiting have nothing but positive this things to say about Mike. Another factor would be Clark Lea a good friend of Mike's that is coaching linebackers at Notre Dame because cause of Mike it was like a package deal when Mike was hired at Notre Dame and I really can't see Mike leaving his good friend and coach after only one year.

Again I have very good sources inside the football program and there is not one sign that Mike is going any where. It would be a complete surprise if either Elko or Brown would leave their current coaching jobs.

Who says the DC needs DB experience? I personally think he comes from the NFL.

No one thought Jimbo would go to ATM, even after it was speculated that he might leave. There were countless reports that ATM was a step down, that no way Jimbo would leave for ATM, etc. Just pointing out that we went out and poached 1 of 4 active NC winning coaches from a storied program. Wouldn't be unthinkable to do it again for a DC even if no one thought the DC was leaving - not necessarily from ND mind you.

The rumor/speculation is that the DC is also bringing another position coach with him - likely a LB coach (particularly if the DC coaches DBs). So he many not be leaving Lea after all. The DC is supposedly coaching in a bowl game, so that eliminates any NFL coaches.

As far as DB coaches, Jimbo's defense starts back to front and he places and emphasis on his DBs. I believe all of his DCs have also been the DB coach.

You could absolutely be right and it's not Elko - and I'm sure you're hoping it isn't. But Jimbo is familiar with him, has coached against him, has complimented him publicly in the past on his defense, and seems to fit most, if not all, the qualifications of the rumor mill. We'll find out soon enough.

These rumors have been floating around a couple weeks and nothing has leaked from ANY program about it. Just because there's no leak doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Whether he ends up here or stays at ND, he's a great coach and you guys are fortunate to have him. Merry Christmas!

Intense amount of prose to squeeze into a mere two sentences, but you stuck the landing, bro.

There are arguments pro and con as to who it will be.

Elko -- con: he likes it a ND and is paid well. Pro -- more money and a stronger guarantee plus the chance to coach with Jimbo.

Schiano - con: concern over moral outrage. Pros -- he can just walk away from tOSU and we'd owe no buyout. He is not that well paid there compared to other DCs. For example, he is paid less than half what Chavis makes. Further, he probably wants to leave since Urban keeps him on a short leash. Every year he signs a one year deal. Not a lot of security there.

Foster - con: he has been a VaTech for 30 years. Hard to see leaving a place like that. Pro - he may want to leave because he was stepped over when they went outside VaTech and hired Fuente. Plus, he probably figures he has taken the Hokies as far as he can. Hokies have limitations because of geography and can never amass the talent required to win a natty. Different story here.

I think it is Elko only because around Dec 1, a flight went from Tallahassee to College Station and then the same private jet went to South Bend. Just too coincidental.

I went backed and looked and didn't find that flight (around 12/1, after Jimbo was hired). There was a charter plane flight (seats 40-50) that went from Tallahassee to College Station (for 1.5 hours) and left for South Bend. That's was on Monday 11/20. The Notre Dame women's soccer team had a game in College Station on 11/17. Just saying.

No way we had Elko lined up before Jimbo was hired, and we aren't chartering a 40 passenger plane to fly there.

So Elko to TAMU.

@cappy - did not realize it was way back on 11/20 that those flights happened. Yes, given that timeline and given what a ND insider has posted here I'm changing my prediction. Right now I'd have.to say it's probsbly not Elko. The most likely new DC will be Schiano.

Yup me neither, his defense gave up 55 points to freaking Iowa this year, and that's with an Ohio St. defense absolutely loaded with talent.

That was an outlier. Outliers happen and I don't believe is a fair representation (by itself) of his coaching abilities.
