And we don't use any of the PUF funds for athletics. Jimbo's money all comes from BMAs and $24 chicken wraps.
This. Neither Texas nor A&M use PUF funds for athletics. Both schools have tons of oil money via donors. TCU has quite a bit of big oil donors as well.

A&M donors have stepped up their game in recent years.

The athletic department is self funded; no PUF money can be used for athletics

I can't believe it took page 2 for someone to correctly state that PUF doesn't go to athletics. The level of ignorance in this thread is a little embarrassing.

While the Permanent University Fund (PUF) does not directly fund athletics--as Squadron 7 noted above--it does indirectly support college athletics by paying for infrastructure for Texas A&M University System and University of Texas System campuses. That physical infrastructure supports athletic programs by providing excellent academic facilities that help attract quality scholar athletes.

Access to the PUF by Texas A&M thus allows Aggie private donor funds--including those from the 12th Man Foundation--to support the Athletic Department instead of paying for basic campus infrastructure such as buildings, roads, and sidewalks. Colleges and universities without access to an endowment like the PUF must seek legislative appropriations and donor funds to pay for basic infrastructure on their campuses, resulting in less money for their athletic programs.

One example of where the PUF did help fund college athletics was in 1972 when the teassips used PUF money to construct the base of the Texas Memorial Stadium west side expansion as Bellmont Hall. As noted on the Bellmont Hall History page, the Hall is "an 11-level, 500-foot tall building which was added within the support structure of Memorial Stadium's west side upper deck to house the offices of Intercollegiate Athletics, physical education facilities and lecture halls." Paying for the base structure of the football stadium west side expansion and the athletic department offices with PUF funds decreased the total cost of the project that had to be funded by sip donors.

It's much more than the PUF, folks.

Long-time family friends of mine worked for the Development Foundation. He retells the story to me a lot, when they started and had a modest fundraising goal (forgot the number). They BLEW past that years before the deadline by MULTIPLES.

Yes, getting the PUF money helps, but frankly, it's the wealth of former students and the love for the school. We ballooned into a modern university in 1975 ish, after mandatory Corps membership was no more and we allowed women in. 20-30 years later, those Aggies were in positions of power at their companies, had personal wealth, etc. and the deep love of the school that causes many outsiders to think of us as a cult. Put that together with the PUF, and we now have an ivy league school Endowment and the top grossing Athletic department in the country.

With 66K enrollment now and hopefully the same love, I only shudder to think what our endowment will be in 20 years.

And in the days of athletic dorms, they had the luxury wing of Jester while we built Cain (a slight upgrade from Hart).

This massive enrollment at Texas A&M is what John Sharp envisioned and wanted all along when he became Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. He constructed Kyle Field to seat 102,733 so it is bigger than Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and any other stadium in Texas and then opened up enrollment to fill the stadium with both students and alums.

Hiring a big-time coach like Jimbo Fisher was part of Sharp's plan to fill Kyle Field, increase 12th Man Foundation contributions, increase Texas A&M Foundation contributions, and help Texas A&M excel well beyond every other Texas and SEC school when it comes to athletic and academic facilities and operations. Texas A&M having access to both PUF money and private contributions is bringing to fruition Chancellor Sharp's vision and plan.
