TCU was a a bottom dweller before they found the right fit. We will as well.

Clemson was basically like A&M until they got Dabo

We could also get Dabo.

Clemson had 1 MNC - 1982 under Danny Ford.

Interesting that Danny Ford was on the hot seat entering the '81 season, his 4th as HC. Was not ranked in the top 20 preseason that year, after a disappointing 6-5 finish in '80. Stating the obvious, save Kansas to one extreme and Alabama the other, you just really can't reliably predict from one year to the next.

The only legit reason is if they offered a big named coach a lot of money and cuz we have nice facilities

Other than that:
-we are a slightly above average program
- our fans will turn on your fairly quickly
- board of regent members will talk **** about you on Facebook
- you have to get your **** pushed in by Saban once a year
- you have to live in college station
- you have to put up with the TexAgs staff on a weekly basis
#16 in all time wins out of 120 D1 Football teams is slightly above average?

I love when people cite a program's "status" based on wins/losses that happened UNDER DIFFERENT COACHES as a reason that a coach wouldn't go somewhere. Somehow they're confused on the very basic point that those wins/losses had and have zero to do with the prospective coach. Their only function is in recruiting to "tradition" and that doesn't really matter that much, especially to kids today. After the first couple seasons of a coach's tenure it's absolutely irrelevant.

1. In the middle of a great recruiting area
2. Big salary
3. Demonstrated patience by decision makers ... perhaps to a fault
4. Top 5 facilities and stadium
5. Best possible conference affiliation
6. Top notch financial and fan support
7) Good environment for raising a family
8) enough talent on campus now to make quick
Incremental improvement

I could list more but I think the point is made.

I have to add this point... if you think this fan base turns on a coach quickly you have never been anywhere else. It's exactly the opposite.

Best to avoid the negative people. They come up with problems that don't exist.
According to the Biden White House, what Joe Biden says does not represent the official position of the Biden administration.

Well you can bank on all our adversaries that frequent TexAgs to copy and paste the OP to every website known to man

Who was the last A&M coach to leave on his own terms?
People of integrity expect to be believed, when they're not, they let time prove them right.

Paul "Bear" Bryant is the correct answer and A&M is dramatically different today than at that time.

Because we will pay him and he thinks the A&M job is the best offer he gets
Same reason anybody takes a job

Enough of the "we are a slightly above average program" bs. There are 130 schools in D1. Name 65 programs that are more successful than ours. Try to name 50. I bet you objectively couldn't name 30 schools that are more successful than us on a consistent basis. Check out any list of all-time college football programs. I can't find one that has us outside the top 25.

Business Insider #25 all-time
Bleacher Report #16 all-time
CBS Sports #18 all-time
CollegeChoice.net #17 best football school
AP #18 all-time
#22 in wins

how many people want to take a job that they know they're going to get fired from?

Well, I would, if I knew I would make 5 million a year until I was fired.

The guy that we want does not expect to ever be fired. He expects a statue of his likeness to be erected outside the stadium while he's still coaching here.

Those rankings are less impressive if the denominator is P5+ND, which is more relevant than all of D1. That's also the basis for the highest one you listed, from Bleacher Report.

65-66 teams depending on whether you add in BYU.

2 Things that Drive Top-Level College Coaches:

1. Opportunities to be highly successful in Strong Recruiting, Facilities, Large rabid fan base, TV contracts & Winning - both Conference & National Championships.

2. Opportunities to advance their career goals, coaching legacy, ego & financial position.

All of this is available at Texas A&M "Right Now".

So NO agent for any premier coaches is not going to listen and propose back to his client - When the Texas A&M's search committee Calls.

I agree except:

We are in a tough conference. Probably the toughest.
Lots of pressure to win and a fan base that is very loyal but expects results.

That takes a hungry coach or a coach that is all-world

Everything else is spot on

So the question is...

Do we get an all-world coach? Can we?

If not, where do we get the hungry, new guy?

Tough business.
