He was one of the best ever to play for the Aggies: If this video don't get ya motivated for some football, nothing will. He could teach our current CBs some valuable lessons on how to play the game.

he'd have that stuff dripping off him. usually with wrist tape dangling past his fingertips. I think he used to pop receievers in the face with the sticky tape also. he wasn't just a good cover corner he intimidated also.

Hayes didn't know anything about Stickum until the original Mr. Stickum, Fred Biletnikoff taught him how to use it. Biletnikoff abused Stickum 5 years before Hayes was even drafted.

Was state 400 meter champ in high school. Started out as a safety at A&M, if I recall correctly. Excelled at blocking punts early in his career at A&M.

I always thought Belitnikoff looked like a contract painter that would've had a '78 Chevy Love van with the porthole window and a wolf mural painted on the side.

Without question, Lester Hayes was likely the most successful Texas Aggie to go into the NFL from those 1970's Emory Bellard teams that I recall.

Just an extraordinary transition. Played LB at A&M, then transitioned to Strong Safety. Then was just a premier CB in professional football. Raiders won Super Bowls after the 1980 and 1983 seasons.

Great video and that voiceover is the stuff of football legend. There's no one like that today.

Back when the NFL was great. Before thugs had taken over the league with their gangsta mentality; before the incessant drug arrests/charges/suspensions; before the women beating arrests/charges/suspensions; before the murder arrests/charges/suspensions; before the showboating; before halftime became a thing; before pink October; before the NFL became politically correct; before disrespecting the America.

opposite corner just as great- Mike Haynes. i remember that one Super Bowl it was embarrassing
how much they shut down the other team.

it was like watching a college defense go up against 8th graders. utter futility. cant remember the opponent- maybe washington?

heres a great read:

He looked intimidating starting at 5:03 mark where he was pacing back and forth. I hope we have someone on the team this year that can duplicate that.

They existed then too. The internet/media exposed them.

He was a linebacker his fish and soph years. Didn't move to safety until a Jr.

As a LB his soph year against Baylor (raining, as usual) Baylor was threatening at about the 10 yard line (if memory serves) at the south end of Kyle. Lester intercepts an option pitchout and takes it to the house. In the interviews none of the other players were impressed as "he does it in practice all the time."

Lester was best ever at that position. Glad I got to see him play.

Lester was from the 5th in Houston and went to Wheatley. He was the 6th man on their state basketball championship. He won the 4A 100 and 200 yard state UIL championships.

Mad dog started him at DE when he got to A&M. During fall camp he ran after practice with the linemen. When we played wishbone teams, he had the speed to take the QB and the pitch man. He played with violence. He attributed his speed to George Forrman. George would take his lunch money if he couldn't out run him.

Lester was a superb athlete, but, the one thing he did better than any other CB ever, was not let the receiver get off the line cleanly.

He always was able to pop the receiver off the line and many times disrupt the timing of the route.

He was a pretty cool guy and I talked to him several times. He really liked my wife's roommate and went running with her in the evenings but knew there would be backlash if he tried to date her. She was white.

He was considered a loner, and shy guy because of his stuttering issues. But, once he warmed up to people, he really liked to talk.

In the spring of 1976, 4 scrubs from Crocker Hall came together and ran the 440 relay in track and field intramurals against Cain Hall. In order, Skip Walker, Bubba Bean, Carl Roaches and Lester Hayes.
Crocker won. I still have the tee shirt they gave out to event winners.
