He is far from a guarantee. There are freshman and veterans on this list who might not have the type of year we project. Daimler is at 30 because it's going to be him or Kellen Diesch up front. Diesch could be a year out from being a real factor at one of the tackle spots and that's why they brought Daimler in.
He might be able to beat out one of the tackles to start, but this is a guy that will most likely be the third tackle. Last season, you had to call on Koda Martin a few times, I think he started four games as a backup and he was your third guy. That’s what Daimler is, that is what will put him on a list like this one.
Think he will bring a level of maturity, he’s been at OU where they win. He wanted to come to A&M, it’s amazing the amount of transfers from OU to A&M. They don’t have a veteran in that room. Luckily, they do have experience. At the end of the day, they have the experience, but they don’t have the old veterans. Really, Koda and Daimler are the two graybeards in the bunch. Daimler is from a winning team so he knows what it takes. He is a mountain of a man and that position is a big question mark. They are going to need Daimler in some way at some point this season.
I think A&M is a year away from exactly where you want to be up front. Jim Turner has this thing almost where it needs to be. Next season, you will lose Daimler, but you will be adding new guys to the mix. Turner has got this turned around, it’s just a matter of will they be a year ahead of schedule? Daimler helps get them there.
Notes from Olin's thoughts on Daimler
We know so little about him since he hasn’t played much. Kevin Sumlin and his staff must have seen something in him. Daimler has great size. He was a backup at Oklahoma who had a good offensive line. He wasn’t a backup to a bunch of ragtag guys. Maybe he is a solid player, but we don’t have enough to look at to know.
If he can do what the last transfers from OU did, he could be higher than number 30. All that matters now is how he’s going to play. Obviously Kevin Sumlin and Jim Turner saw something in this guy that they liked. There’s no reason to bring him in if you didn’t expect him to make a contribution as a grad transfer.
Keaton Sutherland has some competition if he’s going to start at right tackle with Christian Daimler. You can never have too much competition. Everyone else in that offensive line are young guys and sometimes they just need a change of scenery. We are all willing to have an open mind. At the least he will push the other guys, and at the most he wins the job.
