Right? First time I've seen somebody Peter Principle the **** out of a job and then be promoted out of it instead of being demoted back to where he came from.

I'd kill for Kelly . Could care less about anything he does if he wins. His system is perfect for college.

According to this article, Cal would still owe Sonny Dykes over $7 mil. And its so late in the game, he would be lucky to find a decent OC job. More likely, he gets a job coaching QBs or WRs. Which means he will make $100k in 2017 and Cal will owe him over $2 mil next year,

If Dykes gets another HC job in 2018, he will structure the contract so that he makes the big money in the years after Cal is done paying him. My guess is that Dykes uses this as leverage. Cal probably ends up paying him $5 mil over 3 years as an agreed settlement.

Unless Cal already has a deal in place with Chip Kelly or someone else on that level, they are beyond foolish for so many reasons.

Seriously. Get real tired of saying Chavis is a bad D coordinator blah blah blah. Hate to say but he didnt all of a sudden get bad. The dude is one of the best. Yet he comes here and all of sudden sucks. Nope, it's something going on inside the program, IMO. Or we are cursed and should have built a new Kyle Field on west campus and started from scratch.

Or we have a cultural problem which is keeping us out of success

Just curious

When Chavis was at Tennessee and LSU where did his defenses rank? I've tried to look but couldn't find anything that showed a ranking.

We will continue to have "the curse" if our BMAs keep hiring good ol' boys like Morris / Fedora. The definition of insanity is to do same thing over and over again and expect different results.

I want to say in the 20s or less in total defense but they had slow offenses as well. I think a huge issue is our pace and lack of long drives. We usually 3 and out or score quick. That kills a defense unless your 2 deep is full of starters.

A few College Coaches who Failed in the NFL:

-John McKay (the darrel royal of U$Cw)
-Chuck Fairbanks
-Lou Holtz
-Dennis Erickson
-Steve Spurrier
-NIck Saban
-Butch Davis
-Bobby Petrino

Those are just the ones who come to mind. I bet propper research would turn up at least 30 winners at major college programs who flopped professionally.

You mentioned some that weren't there long enough to know what they could have done.
If Jimmy Johnson first job had been Miami you would have called him a failure? How many coaches have had success at Washington since Spurrier? You would have likely called Pete Carroll & Bellicheck failures after their first job. Kubiack started in college as did many more did who became successes in the NFL.

Sounds like our current HC.
Except one has been to the National Championship game...the other, not so much.

Terribly bad hire on Cal's part. La Tech was a good fit for him and he should have stayed there.

I can't believe Cal kept him for 4 years.

I have wondered over the past few years just how and why a guy with Texas and Louisiana roots would want to go to Cal Berkeley anyway.

Hhmm, let me think for a moment. How about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$?????

If he hadn't jumped for the Cal job, he'd be at tech right now.

Most of us would not call Kubiak an example of the phenomenon. Sure, he spent 2 years here as RB coach. But he wasn't hired as an NFL HC based on his record of college coaching, which is why people on that list were hired.

Seeing Chuck Fairbanks name on the list brings back painful memories of the Pats trying to run the OU option attack with Jim Plunkett.

Make sure you cross refrence it with how long the defense was on the field. Our offense kept our defense on the field all day long.

I guess Kelly could take the job but he has to know that sitting out a year will give him the pick of almost all jobs next year. I assume he is either getting paid by the 49ers or that he has enough money where he can sit out a year without concern. He also could/would do media for some income.

I have to assume a much better job than Cal will be available next year.

I firmly believe that year or two off really reinvigorated Urban Meyer, as well as gave him to really diagnose the game. Not that he doesn't know football, but the way he explained it was like breaking a writers block almost when he came back.

I really don't know if I like Chip Kelly as a candidate here for one reason..his time in the NFL has proven he's arrogant and doesn't learn from mistakes, like his offense never really working other than his first year in the league.

Meyer was never sick/tired at Florida. He knew that was a sham that was going to come down around him. He was always angling for something more, and had an inside track on what was happening/about to publically happen at Ohio St. He got paid big by ESPN to hang out for a year until the dream (college) job came open. If you buy any of what he was selling during that whole time then I'd like to sell you a new product that will pay you $1.5mm in 10 weeks on a $25k investment.

Based now what I heard, Meyer did something at Florida that put his health at risk. In other words, the risk was from outside his body rather than some condition inside it.

This program has serious financial challenges and it's a stretch to say they're committed to playing football to the same degree many others are in the Pac-12, much less around the country.
  • Justin Wilcox, Wisconsin DC
  • Tee Martin, USC OC
  • Jake Spavital, Cal OC
Quote:

He's only 31 but is a third generation coach and considered one of the sharpest young minds in football.

Spavital had a very impressive debut season with the Bears, taking over an offense that had to replace Jared Goff the first pick in the NFL draft and the team's top six receivers. The OC still produced the nation's No. 10 offense, which was only down two spots from 2015.

In his time at West Virginia, Texas A&M and Cal, Spavital has proven to be an elite recruiter, landing both five-star talent but also unearthing unheralded prospects who blossomed into stars (Kevin White, Josh Reynolds). He was also a big reason why Cal landed coveted grad transfer QB Davis Webb last year.
  • Jimmy Lake, Washington Co-DC
  • Chip Kelly
Quote:

My hunch, though, is he wouldn't take Cal. And that is just a guess. If he opts to stay out for the 2017 season, Kelly's going to have many options and that will include at schools much more committed to football than this one.

Decided to eat the buyout anyway.

That's pretty weak sauce as "cause" for termination. He didn't fire a guy quick enough? And didn't hire his replacement quick enough? With the coaches convention coming up?

That Cal AD was on a mission to torpedo Dykes anyway he could, I guess.

His actual "coaching" (or lack thereof) should be sufficient cause.

This guy probably CAN lead a program, but...

-- most likely in the south
-- up tempo offense of teams in the conference
-- somewhere where 8-9 wins is gold

So he's a solid candidate for A&M then....

Why does Texags still blame Spav, as if he's the only ****ty coordinator we've had? Was Mazzone any different this year than Spav last year?

Bet they are getting him on the cheap too, since money is such a factor. Chip Kelly was likely too pricey, even with the 49ers carrying most of the freight.

Washington's supposed all-world offense didn't fair to well against Bama's defense and Spav and his Cal O would have been completely dismantled.

Wasn't impressed with Mazzone this year, but the jury's still out on him. Gotta give him some time to get players accustomed to his system.

Spav was consistently bad and made some truly ridiculous playcalls. He can get better with time, but I can't see him being a P5 coach yet.
