Yep, it all starts with recruiting. Saban is great because he recruits better than anybody else.
Remember Sheffield out of high school? During that process BL made comments and everybody involved in the situation made comments about how much A&M wanted Sheffield and were going after him hard. Only after he picked Alabama did we hear directly from Sheffield and he was making comments about how often Saban called him and communicated with him and how he hardly heard from A&M.
Clearly a disconnect between how much our staff THOUGHT they were doing and what was actually perceived by the recruit.
The kids Saban is involved with get so used to him that they don't turn their back on him. Meanwhile our staff thinks it is making a recruit a top priority, giving him lots of love and the recruit says hardly hear from A&M.
Just another example of where it was clear to me that while an ok recruiter and a guy putting together a decent program that Sumlin was not the guy we needed to get to the top.
Saban isn't better than everybody else because he is smarter, he just works harder at recruiting. The guys he has on the field are just better than the guys they are playing and he works tirelessly to make that happen. I'm sure Sumlin puts in the time but not nearly what Saban does...as Sheffield told us.
