I first compiled a list of everyone mentioned in the coaching search talk as well as adding a few of my own (in no particular order) after the Mississippi meltdowns. I revived this thread with the hope that it can be ongoing. People here think that these coaches would be upgrades to Sumlin. They include:

Chad Morris
P.J. Fleck
Mark Richt
Kenny Sanchez
Dave Aranda
Justin Fuente
Lincoln Riley
Dan Campbell
Gary Patterson
Rocky Long
Mike Maclntyre
Dan Mullen
Steve Spurrier
Gary Kubiak
Bret Bielema
Mack Brown
Lee Fedora
John Gruden
Pete Caroll
Sean Peyton
Chip Kelly
Bob Stoops
Mark Dantonio
Ed Orgeron
Pat Narduzzi
Kevin Wright
James Franklin
David Shaw
Troy Calhoun
Les Miles
Dan Mullen
Bobby Petrino
Paul Chryst
Chris Klieman
Mike Leach
Chris Peterson (a stretch)
Jim Mora (why)
Mark Helfrich (No)
Matt Rhule
Philip Montgomery
Larry Fedora
JT Curtis
John Harbaugh
Dana Holgerson
Art Briles (please no, he is scum)
Lane Kiffin
Tom Herman
Willie Taggart
DJ Durkin
Dennis Allen
Dino Babers
Mike Gundy
Craig Bhol
Brent Venables
Pat Fitzgerald
Paul Johnson
Tommy Tubberville
Sonny Dykes (No)
Steve Addazio
Bryan Harsin
Todd Graham
Scott Frost
David Cutcliffe
Mike Riley
Rich Rodriguez
Kirk Ferentz
Greg Schiano
Jaremey Pruitt

(I left out studs Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, and Jimbo Fisher).

I like Fleck, Petrino, Campbell, Malntyre, and Leach the most.
Discuss.

If we're actually serious about winning big, the answer is Chip Kelly, but we're not really serious.

You said it already- very few "studs" or surefire coaches. Most on that list are either:

-happy where they are
-good but bring lots of baggage
-over-the-hill
-proven failures
-prospects who may or may not be ready for primetime (2/3 usually fail)

Chip Kelly is the only proven winner we might be able to get, but we would have to wait until the season was over to even approach him. He is on the record not considering anything else until the NFL season ends.

I am furious at Sumlin right now, but Kelly is the only realistically available coach I would fire for today. Another dump vs L$U might change the analysis.

How did his teams do against sec? Imagine that day in and day out.

And definitely not David Shaw. He is a terrible coach and arguably loses more terribly in bigger games than we do.

Dan Campbell? You serious?

I think Kelly is a huge hire if you can pull it off. Petrino is a good name, too.

If you're not going to go w established, Fleck would be a really interesting hire.

The rest of those names don't really put A&M over the top, IMO.

Would be worth it just to see the 49ers lose another HC to college.

But... are you sure Chip Kelly gets us?

Look how well he handled Kaepernick.

Q: what do a unicorn, a leprechaun and Chip Kelly coaching the Aggies have in common?

A: none of them will ever be real.

I'd take Leach or Petrino, guys that know and control of their own offense... and are ******* hard core. So tired of coach Good Times!

So is Tom Herman dead to us now? Was it all of the kissing or all of the losing?

Fleck doesn't seem like a fit here. He is a Midwest guy and would have trouble recruiting Texas. My top guy is Chad Morris, unless for some pipe dream miracle reason Chip Kelly becomes an option.

We need someone with real experience... being good against Tulsa, Memphis and Cincinnati isn't gonaa cut it in SEC.

You must add Patterson. I don't know why, but I feel like I've seen this list on the Shaggy site.

Good. Go recruit some midwest OL, interior DL and LB's. TX produces plenty of the rest. Urban Meyer was a midwest guy, so was Saban.

Top 4 "Attainable" Coaches:

Les Miles - Proven winner in SEC West. Reunite with Chief and hire a good offensive coordinator.

Chip Kelly - Proven winner. Period.

Mike Leach - He won at Tech . . . And Washington St. He would win here and give Saban fits. And if not, he would be hilarious. So there's always that.

Chad Morris - Up and coming.

I like how Tom Herman losing games isn't good enough for us, but Sumlin losing is

Agree. I think the mindset that he isn't a fit because of the reasons above are wrong. If he's a great coach, he's a great coach. Period.

I do not want Miles. He has shown bad judgement equal to or worse than Sumlin in hiring coordinators. Anyone who thinks hiring Cam Cameron is a good idea is bad at hiring coaches and absolute inability to bring in good QBs to the absolute detriment of their offense.

Kelly is very interesting but I'd rather have Morris since he went here and would be a final destination job for him imo and his familiarity with the state of Texas back to his Lake Travis days.

The game of football has largely passed by Miles. Maybe, just maybe he really has had an epiphany and is more open to changing his offense, who really knows? But if he's still tight with Cam Cameron as his OC, I'd wager he's not that open to it.

But here's the only intriguing risky hire to me. Lane Kiffin.

And that's a pretty risky hire given Joey Freshwater's history.
