Whats entertaining is watching the naysayers come on here and give their opinion of Sumlin should have done this and Sumlin should have done that. We were bad last year, over, and over, and over. When in reality you can tell they know very little about what it takes to be a really good team. So they spew their ignorance and puff out their chest like they know everything it is to know. All the while, they are blissfully clueless about most anything about football other than a win/loss record on paper. Now that's entertaining.

I know what it takes. More wins than we had. You can church it up all you want, but wins and losses are all that matter. Did you score more than your opponent? Yes or no. If you don't have enough wins to get to Atlanta, then the answer is to score more more while keeping your opponent from scoring as many or more.

Pretty simple actually. You geniuses that try to make it about something other than wins and losses are just looking for moral victories where they don't exist.

But keep tooting your pretentious "I know more than you about football" horn.

It's endlessly entertaining.

Let's start w oline technique & players not knowing blocking assignments

We can move on to poor play calling based around a pre-snap read offense later on

Though ASU did suck worse than us would anyone like to argue against the three points that OP made? That we'll be better without last year's QB's and Spav, that our DL will be a strength, and that Christian Kirk is a freak?

Didn't think so.

It still remains to be seen if Knight is gonna progress in games. Other than that, the OP's points are sound.

Addition by subtraction-Having Kyle Allen, Kyler Murray, & Jake Spavital gone will make us better.

QB is still a total wildcard for us with T. Knight this year. I'm hopeful, but there is no guarantee we'll have better QB play this year.

As for Spav, this fall we find out how much of the offensive woes were due to him opposed to bigger issues with Sumlin's influence on the offense. McKinney didn't look to hot as an OC either.

8-5 = .500 in conference play. I don't know how that can be acceptable to anyone. It's accepting mediocrity.

I dont think anyone finds that acceptable but the call to fire sumlin is absurd. It takes time to build a power house football program. We live in a world where everyone wants to microwave everything and have it ready in 30 seconds. A good brisket takes hours and hours to smoke... Given sumlin more time. I believe he will get us to where we want.

Once you've completed 4 years, you've starting over again. If you can't get it done by then, you aren't.

As Laterus said, this ain't rocket science.

Takes time to build a coaching staff. There are contracts and availability issues. More goes into building a top notch football program than who is on the field.

SO how many failures to do you have to hire to get it right? How many mulligans does a $5M/yr coach get?

You know how I know Sumlin ain't gonna get it done? The offense last year or the year before. I blame Spav for ZERO. It is the head coaches responsibility to be able to TRAIN a coach to do a job he is supposed to do (if he needs to). Sumlin was an offensive coordinator. That was his so-called expertise. He should be able to throw any ol person out there and get good results, because SUMLIN should have taught him what he didn't know. Sumlin failed. Some coaches are just good coordinators and don't have the ability nor capacity to handle the head coaching job. Sumlin is one of those types.

It if were only the defense having problems, I could see giving a little time. The offense, 4 years is more than enough.

The QB circle jerk, the 59-0 meltdown, what else do you need to know? The guy is good at flying around in helicopters and designing the most hideous uniforms....I'll give him that.

I'm fresh out of koolaid. 5-7 here we come.

Kyle Allen will be fine at UH and would have been fine here too. He played well against weaker teams. In the SEC West, A&M's oline was not good enough to protect him. Only a year's worth of starts and half of those were against exceptional front sevens that had zero respect for Spav's run game.

Sumlin has hired 7 coordinators at A&M (including Christensen). 4 of them have been failures, and the same things are being said here about Mazzone that were said about Christensen.

TexAgs always says "It's Saban's defense" and "It's Urban Meyer's offense" and "It's Chip Kelly's offense" etc. If Sumlin is an "offensive genius" and can't do better than 1 for 4 (maybe 1 for 5, maybe 2 for 5) in hiring offensive coordinators then the problem isn't in "having enough time to build a coaching staff"

Just get ready to get real sick of Rocky Top, although white lightning ain't too bad.

Despite the 2005 Cotton Bowl (worst game day outcome I've ever attended, including the loss to Baylor), Rocky Top is probably my favorite school song outside of anything from Aggieland. Fun to sing and jam to, and if I were a Vol I would have that thing as my ringtone and constantly blasting from my back porch speakers every weekend.
You didn't sit right next to their band, obviously. **** Rocky Top.

I agree with OP on the basic point he's making, not necessarily ASU was specifically the game to look to.

It's very true. We should be better "on paper" this year by subtraction. I think the Kyle and Kyler were more of distraction than we really realized most of the season. Both had incredible attitude issues.

And Spav had his issues, I'm guessing Mazzone will be better.

I don't think the OP meant the ASU game was the measuring stick. But I think his/her point is valid. We should be better this year on paper. Even with the drama we had and sub-par offensive coaching we had last year, we went 8-4, even had a chance to beat Bama but for three pick-6s.
