I now (maybe, partially) realize why Sumlin didn't hire Turner until now........Pride.

One of the toughtest things you can do as a high level professional is admit your predecessor was better than you at something. Sumlin had to swallow his pride (which drives most top level coaches) to improve the o line. Anyone willing to do that for our team is a true Aggie, whether he does us right out wrong this season.

I don't think there's any evidence that Sumlin makes hiring and firing decisions based on pride. It's more likely Sumlin just realized his OL coaching (and more broadly his coaching team) was ineffective and he needed to fix it or he would be fired.

I don't really blame him for bringing BJ Anderson to start. Whatever he was doing was working at UH (of course, against lower quality athletes), and you try to keep your team together as best you can.

Sounds like a Rock the Good Ag narrative...

I grew that I wish he would have let BJ go and kept Turner from the beginning.

But I really thought he would get a look instead of that Christensen guy.

Definitely glad he is in the fold... Could make or break our season....

The offense rolled along pretty good for the first two years and it was a different style than what Sherman ran, so you don't know how well the different styles will mesh.

In fact, you don't know for certain how well the styles of Mazzone and Turner will work together now. It looks promising. You would have thought someone with Christinsen's background would have made some significant improvements instead of making things worse. Time will tell.

I was a little skeptical when Christensen came on board, but certainly hopeful. About midway through the season I was ready to dump him, and realized that we had just hired him and would likely be stuck with him for another two to three years. When I heard the news that he was fired, it actually raised my appreciation for Sumlin quite a bit; he knew it was the wrong hire, and did something about it right away.

Sumlin is coaching not only for his job but for his career this season. That made the decision to dump Spavital and Christensen an easy one. He also went a different direction with the new hires, hiring more experienced, old school football guys. Guys who are more concerned with football than social media and trying to be buddy-buddy with HS kids.

Wasn't Turner still somewhat involved with the Incognito deal in Miami after the 2014 season? Hiring him then may not have been feasible at that time, and thinking he and Spavital could co-exist would be foolish.

Dance with who brung ya.

I don't think it was pride. I think it was there was a reason we were getting a new coach and needed guys around him he was most comfortable with.

Anderson survived two years on Jake, Luke, Ced, etc... Once the real talent was gone, Anderson was exposed.

Christianson working for Spav was just stupid! Maybe he has finally learned, don't so stupid?

In '12 Turner went w/Sherman to the pros. We don't know what, if anything, Sumlin did to try & retain any of the prior staff; however, I doubt Turner chooses to stay at the CFB level when the pros are calling. I could be wrong. Moreover, Sumlin did not know how Turner would mesh w/his staff, system, ect... & Turner has Incognito making him a bit radioactive for a while. I'm all in on Turner now, & even in '12 wished we had kept him, but don't blame Sumlin for taking a while to get him.
