Not an excuse. Simply a fact. Kids with fathers on average do better than those without.
In no way is this an "excuse" for crimes committed. They will/should be punished to the full extent of the law.

Not a criminal lawyer, but it could all depend on him. From what I've heard, they're handing out time credit for good behavior like its at a soup kitchen. If he behaves himself he could get out in literally months -- especially if no one opposes it. Too many inmates, too many case files, etc. Stay off the radar, so what you're told (the toughest part), don't piss off the wrong people, and they'll practically throw you a party on the way out.

I find it hard to believe that this thugs character wasn't already known on the recruiting trail. Why would Sumlin offer a guy like this? Did he not "ask around" about him? An armed robbery of a dope dealer usually isn't the first offence. This guy was trouble WAY back in Carthage. How many kids does this guy have anyway?

I know someone who was an attorney and the salutatorian of his high school class that did something similar and got off. Now, just recently got his license reinstated, so blaming Sumlin for not knowing is not fair. You would be surprised what people can hide.
