So.... if a football player self identifies as a girl...

does that mean his scholarship counts towards Title 9?

I think this will unfortunately come down to a question of Pre vs Post-op. I like how your thinking... We live in some weird times.

I've been saying it for awhile. This trend can only end up at possible conclusion: gender can no longer be considered for anything. Say you have a 6'9" biological male that can't make it in men's basketball. All of a sudden he decides he's a female. He can't stand it anymore, it's just who he is. Who are we to say he can't play girls basketball? And why shouldn't his scholarship count as a female?

Or a guy that really enjoys volleyball. She he be confined to a club sport just because of his gender? That's insanely bigoted. And if he identifies as a she, shouldn't (s)he be allowed to play on scholarship as a female?

i don't know how long it will take but it's seriously the only possible conclusion: there can be no more gender lines in any decisions like this. The ones who will ultimately be hurt the most (ironically) are women athletes.

Fortunately, the trans issue is nothing but Pop culture. People should treat it as such. Like everything else that is pop culture, it eventually dies for awhile. Remember that only 3.2% of Americans identify as being gay and an even smaller number identify as something other than what they were born as. Only a small percentage of that 3.2% are activists. So, we are catering to this very vocal, but very minor part of society. The issue is the attention that pop culture has put on it because of pop culture media pushing their own agendas.

I find it hilarious that if a man walked into a grocery store and began hanging his arm, running around the store, claiming to be an elephant, drinking water and spraying it at people, he would probably be arrested and admitted into a mental hospital. But a man who claims to be a woman, which they clearly are not, dresses up in high heels, obviously strains to make his voice higher, wearing a dress, gets to impose their "rights" on everyone else.

I don't post that to be homophobic. I post it to illustrate the illogical actions of our society.

On a side note, with the bathroom issue of trans, where we pee or poop has very little to do with our own comfort. It has everything to do with the comfort of others. Otherwise, I'd be peeing outside all the time, because nothing is more comfortable that walking into my backyard early in the morning, letting my dog out, and taking a pee right there, feeling the cool morning air on my boys. Should I have the right to do that in view of others? How about the potted plant outside the bathroom, I feel more comfortable going in it.

Relevant because gender of birth is the only thing that should matter in college athletics.

We're having a half joke, half realistic discussion about how blurring the gender lines can potentially change the landscape of college athletics

They'll just stop calling it women's and men's sports and switch to XX chromosome sports and everything else. Want to play in the XX division? Take the chromosome test. Want to play in the everything else division? No test needed, welcome aboard.

I think southpark did an episode on "Dolphinoplasty" a man turned himself into a dolphin.

Think about the possibilities of self-identifying as a protected species! You could stop paying your rent or the mortgage, and then call your house a protected habitat. If anyone tried to evict you, just call the EPA and then look out!

Transgender athletes should count as 2/3 of a female athlete. No way THAT could backfire.

I have 3 kids in elementary school. I try to answer their questions about this stuff but it just leads to....

Eff it. Dammit I'm sticking with the "humans are sexually binary, not bi or tri or ****** or whatever" argument.

Normal heterosexuals reside within at least 4 or 5 standard deviations of the population right? Everything else is <2% outliers statistically.

Crap now I have to refresh on STAT to teach my kids STAT to explain this PC clown show we live in.

Ag4Coal, that's not the argument being made by the "other side", stop spitting off that drivel that people are trying to make gender irrelevant in athletics.

Except science can make your body a lot more like the gender you weren't born as.

No rule that I've seen from even the most liberal sporting bodies has said you can put on lipstick and compete with the women.

All of them, all serious proposals and policies look to protect the integrity of women's athletics (and men's).

I'm not saying all the rules are the best possible rules, but the ignorance around this issue is maddening.

That's the point of everything I've said so far. It's not the argument being made YET!! But it is the only logical conclusion. If I said, right now, that I identify as a female, what right does anyone have to keep me from playing sports with females? And if anyone wants to come in with genetics, they can't!! Because our culture is currently fighting that battle in the bathrooms of America and I'm betting the left side wins. If not right now, in a few years. So once that "right" is established to be a gender regardless of your genetics, what can anyone say about me not playing sports, using the same locker room and showering with females? There will be no argument against it. That's my whole point.

And before you say that will never happen, not even 10 years ago gay marriage wasn't even legal in CALIFORNIA!! Look at what we're dealing with now. It's bound to happen. And women will be the ones dealing with the unintended consequences more than anyone else.

Also (since title 9 was the read topic) that is the current "reason" being used by the admistration to come down on states and school districts that are refusing to let trans students use the bathroom of their choice. If that is how the court decides (and Hillary winning and appointing a Supreme Court nominee would all but guarantee that) gender boundaries are swept away. This is an actual possibility and you not agreeing with me won't change that.

You couldn't be any more wrong about this. It is purely about the acquisition of power and the silencing (and even outlawing) of viewpoints that don't support the left on view of race, gender, and class.

Given the Obama administration mandate of yesterday evening (including the mention of Title 9) the OP deserves credit for his timely post.

Some of the other fears listed above (Ag4coal) appear to be much closer to reality than I had hoped.

Title 9 shouldn't apply to college football seeing as women have and do play the sport.

Ag4Coal has hit the nail on the head.

Any of you who think this is just a passing pop culture thing are mistaken. Consider just how fast things have changed. As the Supreme Court was debating the gay marriage thing, those standing for tradition asserted numerous slippery slope arguments, only to be mostly shouted down. Less than two years later, Obama issues what amounts to a threat to all our "local" school districts that little boys who like to wear dresses can now use the little girls room, change clothes with them and shower after PE, in the name of making them comfortable, but comfort of the vast majority be damned.

The agenda is indeed the complete distruction of the "construct" of gender, and I would say they have the momentum. This stuff is serious and it may be too late to stop.

If my 10 year old identifies as a 16 year old, i.e. he's a 16 year old in a 10 year old's body, does that mean he gets to get his drivers license early? is this the same concept.

Until Conservatives are voted back in and overturn all of it. Obama can't issue mandates or make anything law. It doesn't quite work that way. This is not a dictatorship. He can talk all he wants but ultimately, every bit of it is up to the state and local school districts on what they choose to do. Every coaching association should and will fight it.
