Guys, I know exactly how to fix the defense. We'll take the best pass rushing defensive end in the country, and play him out of position. POW!

Charlie did it with Malik

Except Malik wasn't a defensive end..

It's also easier to move OLB to MLB than DE to MLB. Usually DE to OLB happens when switching to a 3-4 defense, but not to MLB.

My premise, which was recognized by a small minority of Zoo inhabitants, is that Myles Garrett's acknowledged pass rushing dominance while playing DE is not as consequential as compared to his lining up at MLB because our SEC opponents utilize the run far more frequently than the pass against us. If you take the 9 key games from 2015 (8 SEC games + Louisville), our opponents average 45 rushing plays/game vs. 25 pass attempts. They gain 240 yards/game rushing vs. 163 passing. There was not one of those games where our opponent had more passing attempts and more passing yards than rushing.

I just am not convinced that will change in 2016 without some significant improvement at LB. Myles has the obvious athletic ability but he lacks the experience at that position and maybe the right instincts. Who knows?

It would be interesting to at least see him line up behind the line on obvious running downs.

Actually he is projected as an LB for the NFL by some.

Not as a MLB

No doubt but he would be great at a joker type position.

Some project that he could play outside linebacker in a 3-4, but everyone seems to have his primary position as WDE. I don't doubt that he could be an effective linebacker at the college level, but if we're going to spin a DE down to linebacker I'd go for Cunningham. He's built more like a linebacker.

Our linebackers, if they stay healthy, will be quite good. Myles Garrett at MLB? Sincerely idiotic. Your "theory understood by a few" is wrong. There's no point in defending it cause its wrong.

I think it is a legitimate idea. Sounds reasonable but I think they would have already tried it if they thought it would work.
This certainly has to be correct.

Unfortunately, with best pass rushing defensive end in the country, we still had the worse run defense in the SEC West and the second worse in the SEC.

Our run defense would certainly have been better if we had taken the country's best pass rushing defensive end and played him out of position at middle linebacker. But our overall defense would have suffered. However, it would have been interesting to see an Alabama size LB on our side for a change.

What we need this season is for our linebackers to heal and get better. Our defensive line should be the best we have had in several years.

Worked out awesome for the Texans, right? First Mario and then Clowney?

Mario never played linebacker as Texan. He had 10+ sacks with bills as olb.

Turned out okay for Demarcus ware too

They tried Mario at linebacker for a year. It didn't go well.

Didn't remember that.

But it went fine in buffalo.

When I'm the league, Garrett will likely play both DE & stand up OLB depending on the situation.

But in Chavis system, no need for a position change.

Not sure there is evidence to support either of these two assertions.

Otaro Alaka, the bowl game defensive mvp as a true fresh was injured this last year. Walker was good until injured. C'mon man.

I know this sounds wacky but follow the logic. With the SEC West likely to be a running conference in 2016 (new QBs at Ark, Bama, MSU and LSU hopeless throwing the ball) and with our problems stopping the run and weak play at LB, Myles seems wasted at DE. Given that he has run 4.46 at a weight of 260, it would seem likely that he could play from sideline to sideline at MLB. He could blitz from MLB as well. It won't happen but it would likely turn a big negative into a positive.
I thought moving him to lb made perfect sense and posted it a couple of times last season. The responses I got were a little harsher. My suggestion was OLB though.

OLB would be an excellent spot for him if this were not a Chief run defense.

Garrett would be perfect for a Joker type role too.

There's only one way to resolve this--the zoo needs to take a vore. Let's decide it democratically.

I'm sure there won't be many, if any, arguments that Coach Chavis is one of the greatest defensive geniuses/coaches in college football today - and yet we have a bunch of mental giants, most of whom never played a down of organized football, on this thread who think they're smarter than Mr. Chavis and are able to make drastic changes to his plan!
Boys, let Coach Chavis coach his team while you quietly play your fantasy football in your dreams.
