1. Tate Martell will start under center as a true freshmen at the Rose Bowl in his home state of California.

2. Kevin Sumlin will be on the sidelines as Head Coach.

3. Myles Garrett will be on the field in uniform playing. He could surprise everyone and return for a senior season.

That first question is filled with intrigue. Will Martell start? Will he play primarily (or ever) "under center" or from a shotgun or pistol? Will this be a yet more balanced run offense? Will we maintain the wider splits of the Mumme-style offense continue to be employed? Will there be an emphasis on hurry up, no huddle? Will the management of the RBs change to improve the recruiting pipeline at the position?

Or even more broadly: was there some kind of intentional change towards emphasizing dual threat because of Johnny's success? Or is there a more realistic assessment of very high talent QBs like Russell Wilson and Johnny that views that kind of talent as understandably unique and difficult to replicate?

All of these questions have been visible during the entire Sumlin tenure. And backing them is a very simple observation: Sumlin hasn't had 10 win seasons as a HC with his own recruits at QB. It's an interesting overarching question as to how he breaks that streak and if he can win big without someone else's recruits. I believe he can, but I am less confident about how long it will take in the SEC West. I have floated the four year contract length as a reasonable proxy for discovering the answer. Not because I think he deserves that long, but because if he has really internalized the lessons of the past few years, he COULD be in a better position than anyone else to truly turn the corner. And 8 wins is an excellent starting point for 9 or 10 wins. I think most of us would have been very satisfied with 8 if the first season hadn't gone as well the way we originally anticipated it could have gone.

I'll add to that an additional thought: there are all kinds of ways that Aggies can take it wrong when someone says the new Kyle Field is the house that Johnny built. But the one thing he did do was give us a vision of unbelievable success. There really hadn't been one before him in the previous 10 years. And coincidence or causation, it happened when we needed it most and led to the funding and vision for the new Kyle Field. He does not deserve being idolized for that--though you could argue that his talents on the field spoke for themselves--but it's interesting that we are where we are and more importantly Kevin is where he is in part due to Johnny's success (and likewise Johnny is there due to an extent due to the support of the coaching staff and the fans.)

Hopefully, if I'm still alive and kicking, Saturday, September 2, 2017 will be my 77th birthday. If not, BTHO UCLA anyway!

True fish Martell won't be able to beat out a QB coming off an 11 win season

I think we are .500 at best in 2016 and Sumlin doesn't see November as HC. just my opinion.

Sumlin running a system that demands elite QB play in the SEC does not mesh with him allowing us to turn into QB Transfer U. I just don't see us being better than 7-5 this fall.

How about you don't do to Tate what was done with Kyler. Give the kid a break. No expectations, just be his fan and root for him. I could care less if he starts as a freshman, I simply want him to be happy at A&M and improve each day until the time is right, whenever that is. Show this board can learn like we expect players and coaches to.
